    Hi,
Im interested in drawing satirical cartoons, the kind you would see in newspapers like the examiner, etc. Does anyone know how to get into this line of work, be hired by a newspaper, and what kind of income one could get? any advice on this would be useful since im finding it hard to find some info on the topic.

    thanks

check the "writers and artist's yearbook" in the reference section of your local library - it'll give you details of submission policies and rates for various publications

There are a few different methods that illustrators/cartoonists use for submitting work. Some publications will have submission information on their websites or will give them to you over the phone. In that case you need to have a portfolio together to either bring in or send in for the art director to look at. The other method is portfolio drop off days that some publications have [I'm not sure any publication in Ireland does this anymore but most of the big magazines in places like New york still do it] Its a set day each month were you can leave your portfolio in for the art director to see.

The most common method used now is a postcard campaign - Put a portfolio together of your best work, get it online somewhere [while www.yourname.com looks better if you can't afford to get your own website a blog or livejournal or myspace will do in a pinch but make sure the site is clear and easy to navigate or alternatively join a group like the Illustrators guild of ireland as you get your portfolio hosted on the site] Print up a postcard with your work and contact information. Go through all the magazines, newspapers, publications that you want to submit to, find the name of art director or editor for the section your submitting to and send them a postcard - repeat in 3 to 6 months with a different postcard design.

You can also submit to illustration books and annuals but alot of them charge a pretty hefty fee.

For rates get a copy of the most recent edition of the Graphic Artists Guild Handbook: Pricing and ethical guidlines
It lists the standard rates for various design and illustration jobs including cartooning and comic book work thou be aware that in Ireland the rates are normally alot lower then you would get in say the UK or USA.
