Practical Classic Car?

    Hi,

Firstly - I know very little about cars (can drive, know where petrol/diesel goes, can top up the water, change a wheel etc...). Lately I've been considering getting a new car - currently driving a 02 Hyundai Santa Fe. I was considering buying a classic car. I do relatively little millage < 10k a year. I was looking for something like :

    http://www.carzone.ie/used-cars/Mercedes-Benz/SL-300/12-MONTHS/1090034/

    So, a couple of questions:

    1) How old does a car have to be befores its eligilble for classic tax: 30yrs is that correct?

    2) How old does a car have to be before it eligible for classic insurance: 17yrs?

    3) Is it particular to have a car like the above without a garage to keep it in?

    4) Is it particular to drive a car like this on a regular basis - a couple of times a week.

    5) What kind of expensives should I be looking out for in keeping a car like the above - above and beyond what I'd expect to pay for a relatively newer car?

I was considering keeping my current car and having this or something similar as a second car.

So in short - is it possible to have a practical classic car?

Thanks in advance for your help.

a car has o be from the 70's as far as i remember for classic road tax and insurance, you have to be over 25 and have 1 car insured ( a 700cc chiqicuento in your driveway ?? cost you about 1000 to insure.... dont even drive it )

    also

are you just looking for a german car or how far does your imagination strech ??

budget is a concern also.... always buy a car say 1-2k under your budget so you have money incase something breaks or just needs annual work... the cash is there...

    30 years for tax

    2) How old does a car have to be before it eligible for classic insurance: 17yrs?

Alot of places will insure 15 year old cars as classic.

    3) Is it particular to have a car like the above without a garage to keep it in?
I suppose that depends on the area you live in. I wouldn't fancy parking a car like that in some parts of Dublin

    4) Is it particular to drive a car like this on a regular basis - a couple of times a week.
    Of course it is

    5) What kind of expensives should I be looking out for in keeping a car like the above - above and beyond what I'd expect to pay for a relatively newer car?
I would doubt it would cost you anymore

I was considering keeping my current car and having this or something similar as a second car.

For sure it is. something like that merc will have all the comfort refinment of regula cars today. Rember that would have being the bollix when it was new. with all the latest toys

To be honest if I was buying something like that I'd be looking across the water as there much cheaper.... But I don't know how this will go with the new tax laws

TBH I'd ditch the Hyundai and use the Merc as first car, it's still a modern car and the only downside is lack of space for kids etc.
