Flying Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City

I'm going to Vietnam in about 7 weeks & underestimated the distance from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh & don't fancy 30 hours on a train so was planning on flying

Just wondering, price wise - Vietnam Airlines don't take internet bookings but their website gives the fare ranging from equivalent of €50 -€100 but everywhere else is quoting me €300

Does anyone know if the cheaper fare applies only to Vietnamese citizens (Bangkok Airways do this for Thai people) or if I am likely to get it cheaper if I book while I am in Asia?

    Thanks

Dunno but look at www.attitudetravel.com for a list of budget airlines plying that route.

Are you on a really tight schedule ? If not, its definitely worth doing the journey , breaking it up with stops along the way. I recommend Hanoi > Ninh Binh > Hue > Danang (Hoi an) > Mui Ne > HCMC

^ what he said. Making your way from Hanoi to HCMC is the perfect way to see the country!

Vietnam Airlines is a funny one. It's cheaper to buy airline tickets from a travel agency than going into an actual Vietnam Airlines office. Found this out in Siem Reap. (It's a pain in the ass that there's no online booking).

Are you going to be in another SE Asian country beforehand? If so, book your tickets there. Shop around and get best price.

And no there isn't a different price set for Vietnamese and foreigners. Its a set price for all and its the only airline to fly domestically in the country so they can charge what they like!

How long do you have in Vietnam? I'd suggest bussing it for halfway and then fly they rest. It's a beautiful country and shouldn't be visited just for the BIG cities. You'll want to leave Hanoi pretty soon, only so many beeps you can take!

Defo do a tour of the Mekong Delta. Great! And the people are friendlier in HCMC than Hanoi. All grumpy up there! Oh also, don't miss out on the war museum in Saigon. Really sad but very informative. You won't like Americans much after coming out of there.

    Thanks everyone.

We're on a fairly tight schedule (3 weeks) but starting in Cambodia going overland into Vietnam and working our way up the coast.

We were originally flying from HCMC to Bangkok so were going to fly from Hanoi to HCMC the day of the flight but have actually managed to cancel that one & book Air France from Hanoi to Bangkok for €100 so it's all worked out :)
