Has anyone seen The Ruins yet? Is it worth going to see?

I've read the book, and though quite silly, the first 3/4 of the book had me completely enthralled.

Saw it there last night, it was decent enough, nice and gory in parts
the leg amputation in particular was highly gross!
it was certainly an original enough concept!

This was surprisingly entertaining. It almost felt like a well made video nasty on the big screen!

Granted the plot was barmy, the film homaged (i.e. ripped off) loads of other movies BUT it delivered on what a horror movie should! Its gory and disgusting in parts. There are deffo 2 scenes that are top class

Worth a look if you like the genre.

Good stuff. I was reading a few reviews and apart from IMBD user reviews this movie has gotten quite a good feedback.

As I said, I've read the book and enjoyed the book so I'm looking forward to see how faithful the conversion to film was. Cant wait.

Thinking of heading to see it tonight. After Teeth on Friday I thought a film about killer plants may be somewhat appropriate.

Hasn't been a decent killer plan film since Day of the Triffids...

.. and Little Shop Of Horrors. :o

Saw it yesterday and quite enjoyed it. Went in with low expectations, so I was pleasantly surprised.

Anyone know if there is anything improved/different in the R1 Unrated DVD? Unrated usually means extra scenes/gore, so I'm curious....

Saw it earlier tonight and have to say I was pleasantly surprised. The first hour was excellent and the slowly building tension was expertly handled. A lot of people have said that the last third is disappointing but if you accept it for what it is then it's really quite a satisfying film.

As it stands I'm currently looking at my amazon order basket wondering do I order both The Ruins Unrated and Teeth Unrated even though I saw both over the weekend.

if you're looking for a decent horror, it's awful.
great for a laugh though, the story is just so ridiculous and the acting is so over the top that it's really funny

Ben Stiller produced it, maybe it's actually a comedy like cabin fever? :pac:

Pretty good movie but a little empty - fantastic first hour though.

^ ditto, its a good movie, but its not really a horror by my books. Not enough paranoia plus it's set in daytime for the majority which removes a lot of the tension build up.
also the scene where the plant is chasing the girls out of the ruins was ridiculous, also I could not get over the stupidity of leaving Mathias right beside the plants, even after they had witnessed the plants eating his legs and the numerous bodies they had also found in the plants

Oh dear who knew while quoting posts you can see through spoiler tags! :o

As for daytime. That shouldn't bother me. Horror having to be set at night in order to be scary is a myth. Plenty of the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre was during the day and still managed to be really creepy. Although granted it takes talented direction to pull it off.

Saw this last night with the Movie Club, though it was
actually pretty funny, a bit non-serious, and had some good gory bits without being an all out gorefest.

    The Greeks!

Just after watching this and while it had some terrible acting (Jonathon Tucker especially is one of the most comically OTT actors out there - just watch his performance in 'The Black Donnellys'), it was actually a suprising entertaining film.

Not particularly scary but had enough squeamish gross-out scenes to warrant the viewing.. especially
the scene with Stacy just going all out cutting herself looking for vines and Mattias's leg amputation.

Definitely one of the better American horror films I've seen of late. Very much leave-your-brain-at-the-door stuff but very enjoyable.

Apparently, there's a few different endings so we'll see at least one of them on the DVD extras. Endings are:

The original ending that test audiences saw was of Amy almost getting away in the jeep. However, it turns out the vines had gotten inside her, and one pops out of her eyeball, killing her. Apparently, it must not have set well with the test audiences, so they opted to use the ending you will see in theaters.
    (b)
It is rumored that there will be yet another ending on the unrated DVD when it is released on 8 July, 2008. It's said to be similar to the alternate ending but without the exploding eyes. The final scene will be a cut to a cemetery where Amy is buried. The groundskeeper hears a ringing noise, kneels down in front of her grave, and starts to examine one of the red flowers growing on it.

Saw the unrated version (I was curious to see what was different), and I can confirm that
it uses the ending where Amy has vines moving inside her face while she is driving away. Don't think it had any popping eyeball action though....

When I saw the theatrical ending, I thought that's where it was going. The close-up of her face and eyes just lead me to believe we'd
see the vines moving inside her face
... and that's how it would end.

Went to see it last night and thought it was really good - like alot of people have been saying. I went in with low expectations and was pleasently surprised. Worth going to see

Those two alternative endings would have made much more sense.

    But Happy Endings ftw! (
no not those kind of happy endings
    )
