HAve been playing a lot of football (gaa) and i think i've torn my quad. have a really sharp (stabbing pain) in my upper thigh that hurts when i move suddenly. I hurt it last week - and after resting for nearly a week, hurd a loud click when kicking a ball last night.

Any advise how long i'll need to rest - is there any point going to a doctor?

Sports doctor/ physio. Rest (4+weeks) ice elevation compression. u shud not have played/trained so recently after injury. #Frank Lampard was out for ages with a similar recurring injury last season.

Get a medical professional to evaluate your injury not a bunch of slack-jawed randomers on the internet. Check out the charter concerning injurys on this board.

    Oh and in before lock!

I got a similiar tear twice in the last 5 years, its total agony and you know immediatly once its happened. I could walk fine straight after it, but to attempt to kick a ball would be pure agony. I kept coming back too early, injuring it again. Eventually just gave it 3 months without kicking a ball and it healed up nicely.

    Sports physio - ASAP.

The problem with tears is that unlike broken bones, they don't heal up stronger. When a tear heals you're left with a load scar tissue which isn't really good for anything but re-injury.

A good physio will get around this with massage, stretching, rehab etc... Leaving a tear alone in the hopes it will fix itself is probably the worst thing you can do. Remember, tears don't just happen. They're caused by an underlying problem. It might be flexibility, it might be a strength imbalance of some sort. But unless you takcle the REASON for the tear you're liable to reinjure it.

Treating the cause and not the symptom is where your physio will come in too.

Go to a doctor/physio. I'm getting fed up with threads asking what should be asked of a medical professional.

    Locked.
