Just a question for those who are studying Physics w. Medical Physics...

What is the maths on the course like, would a person coming from OL Leaving Maths struggle?

    Thanks,
    Stephen

Thats a new course this year isn't it? I'd say it is doable with OL Maths but you would at least want to have an apptitude for Physics/Maths. There will also be a lot of applied maths.

    Hey Stephen,

I've just finished first year of "Applied Physics and Electronics or Experimental Physics" (which thankfully, I believe, is now simply called "Physics and Applied Physics") and I'm in with the "Physics w. Med. Physics" students for the core Physics module and the OL Maths module, which are the same for both courses.

I did HL Maths for the Leaving and got a D3, so I'm no great shakes in that area. I found that the OL Maths module wasn't difficult at all and if you're anyway decent with Physics you shouldn't have to much trouble with the Maths of the core Physics course.

    Hope that helps a bit.

Doing a PhD in physics having come up through the Apllied Physics ranks.

Medical Physics is a new course combining Physics, Anatomy and Physiology mainly.

In 1st year it isn't horribly different than most other Science courses. I'd say of the 4 Physics courses on offer it's the least mathsy (Christ that's a horrible phrase).

You would want to be a decent hand at algebra and thats about it I'd say.

points range for the new Medical physics course? 300 - 350? or 400 - 450?

Guessing I'd say closer to 350 than 450.

    Science is around 310

    Other Physics courses around 330

Hey Stephen, I've just finished year 1 of Physics with Medical Physics, at the beginning you are given the option of standard maths or honours maths.
They tell you from day one that Honours level isnt required, its way too hard unless you intend to pursue a pure maths degree. There were ten people in the course last year and only two of us took the honours route. I dropped from honours after Christmas, and pass is pretty much the same standard as leaving cert honours. Less than half of the people on the course did LC Honours so you would be fine. Any other questions on the course, let me know!

I think it was 320 last year.....Im not sure if there was even a points limit last year, only ten people applied (to my knowledge) and all of us got into the course...
