No audio from Quicktime :(

All of a sudden Quicktime won't play audio with most of my (.avi) video files. Same problem with Front Row and Quick Look (which use quicktime). The same files play fine with VLC. No problem with iTunes or anything else. I've tried trashing the quicktime preference files but no joy. What gives?

Using Quicktime 7.5.0 on a Macbook Pro OS 10.5.3

    Do you have Flip4mac installed?

Nevermind, I seem to have solved the problem by installing Perian, as per this thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=7348653

Maybe someone else will find this tip handy.

I do indeed, never bothered poking around much with it though.

Since Itunes 7.5 avi files made with visualhub don't have sound for me. seems to be a quictime/perian conflict. Very annoying.

Thought I had this problem fixed but Front Row still isn't playing audio with movies. Will update the thread if I manage to fix it.

Macfixit.com mentions that some of its users have had issues after updating to Quicktime 7.5:

    ***************

No sound in AVI, other files -- fix Several users have reported lack of sound in various movie file formats after the QuickTime 7.5 update:

    * "One of the several problems is related to Quicktime. .AVI movies have no sound at all."
    * "After updating to QT 7.5, my Flip4Mac will play Flash movies just fine but without sound. A check of 'Properties' shows a sound track as MPEG Layer 3. It's very frustrating. I have tried everything I could think of but no luck.'

If you are having issues with sound not playing in QuickTime content after the update to QuickTime 7.5, try launching then quitting GarageBand, or launching then quitting the "Audio MIDI Setup" application located in Applications/Utilities. Failing that, go back to Audio MIDI Setup, and under the Audio Devices tab, make sure the Audio Output Format is 44100.0 2ch-16bit.

Bump! Quicktime and Front Row now appear to be ok but Quick Look still isn't playing audio with video previews (it plays mp3 previews fine). I've tried the fixes suggested above and searched for a solution via google but I'm stumped. Anyone got any further suggestions?
