    go for it.
    You only live once! :D
More details please, what will you be working at? What people will you be working with?

If it's a great deal, you should definitely go!
Not every day you'll get a chance to go to Trinidad - if it doesn't work out you can come back home.
But if you don't go at all, you may regret it in later years.

Depends how reliant you are on your wages for mortgage repayments and how you'd feel about losing your job if it did come to that.

If you can feel alright about those issues, then I'd say go like the clappers.

The job is a professional one. I will leave it at that. No its not me being on the game. I dont mind losing my job really I dont know why cos I love it but its not the be all and end all of my life. Selling the car will pay for the mortgage.

Go! Its very simple, you live once then you die. How will you know if you like it if you don't explore? By the way, you mostly listed good points so it seems like you want to go :D.

I cant Id loose way more than I would gain.

1 I would have to pay for the dogs to go to kennels €4000 for the year
    2 I would loose my TRS €200 + a month
3 Have to register with the PTRB (??)
4 Have to pay tax on the rent
5 Would be liable for capitol gains if we decided to stay and sell the house.

My sister is moving in paying all the bills and a little bit towards to mortgage but like I said we will sell one car to cover the mortgage for the year and keep the other one for when we come back.

I'm just back from Trinidad after spending most of the last 3 months watching cricket and island-hopping around the Caribbean. I'd say go for it. My only concern would be crime. It is quite close to Colombia so has become a major transshipment point for cocaine. But places like Tobago, Maracas Beach, etc make it all worthwhile. You'd be hard-pressed to find a more multi-racial place on earth and the food is amazing!!

Trinidad is also not quite what you may imagine. Because it is a major LPG producer it is quite industrialised and Port-of-Spain is a built-up city with horrendous traffic. I lived there for two years in the mid-80s and i was quite surprised on my last visit at how much it had changed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 93 ✭✭oranjeboom

No Im not working for Digcell. I know about the crime aspect and the fact that you cant reallly move freely there but we get a car.

Yes there is something on the back of my mind but Im just wondering if that is just the way to rational side of me saying, you both have a job here, you have no debt are you sure you want to throw it away and leave. Oh but I really want to go, another few sleepless nights for me I think.

Trinidad is one of, if not the, richest Caribean country due to it's natural oil reserves. It shares oil fields with Venezuela.

I've only ever stopped over in PoS a couple of times on route to Tobago, but I met loads of Trinis who had moved to or were on holiday in Tobago and they all mentioned the crime, but mainly in Port of Spain.

Trinis have a great accent as well and everyone I met is very nice, they invented the Steel Drum out there as well so you get to hear plenty of steel bands which I love.

If it is just the two of you, then I would say go for it, but get your Padi diving certificate first as the diving in Tobago is awesome :D

Ya I heard it was the richest and that Port of Spain is industrialised. But like I said my mate is over there. If we go we will be living and working in Port of Spain. We will be well looked after the house we will be living in is very secure and is patrolled by security all the time. I have already been told where I can and cant go and well there are places here I wouldnt go during the day or night either. Yes I think we will go. I can dive already my Dad was and instructor for years.

Def go for it. That's how I ended up where I am and met my girly. Changed jobs and made it a permanent stay. You end up saving a fortune as everything is paid for.

Go for it, you sound like you already love the place. It will be a change but everything is provided and you know others there. Exciting stuff :D

Thanks so much guys nobody really has anything negative either on here or at home. The only things to worry about is the crime and the sunburn. I think I will do it. Watch this space for updates.

sarcasm aside you could get a better deal. I had something similar but also got €1k a month for food and a flight every 2 weeks.

1000 euros a month for food... just how much Bratwurst and Klöser would that buy?

Ah but I am also getting a car and all our travel and accommodation is paid for. The only thing we have to pay for ourselves is our food. The car is tax and insured and petrol is paid for. I cant really go and ask for food money now can I?

Ah, Germany's notoriously pricey public transport system puts it into perspective.

I was out there working for a couple of weeks last year.

Very cheap place to live. As someone already pointed out the crime is quite bad there but just use common sense and you should be fine. Dont go out walking on your own at night and so on.

Everyone over there seems to be very friendly as well from what I saw.

The main pastime there seems to be street racing, theres a lot of guys there seem to think they're from the fast and the furious.

Just for the record Stag is the best beer available there (Carib being second). The rum shops are pretty cool as well.

If your not used to the heat watch out as well the humidity can get very high and it can be a killer. Plus when it rains, it ****ing rains. I've seen whole days on site cancelled due to rain off.

I'd say go for it. What part of Trinidad would you be moving to exactly ?

Port of Spain, the house is near West something Mall. I would be working in and around Frederick Street AFAIK. Ya I know the humidity will be a killer but thank christ for Air Con. I dont really drink much beer Im more of a Vodka person. How expensive is Vodka and the like.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,584 ✭✭✭c - 13

A beer was about the equivalent of €2 if I remember correctly, the rum was about the same. Never drink vodka but i'd reckon its the same as the rum.

Also do you like spicy stuff ? If so make sure you try the local pepper sauce there, its absolutely lovely. I'd kill for some again - it literally blows the mouth off you.

Drink driving seems to be pretty rampant there too but the cops dont seem to pay any attention to it so just be extra cautious when driving at night.

I cant remember the name of the city I was in at the moment, it was about an hours drive out of port of spain, second biggest city there IIRC.

Go, go, go! There'd be no shadow of doubt in my mind if I were in your shoes. And after all, if it all goes horribly pear shaped you have a house to come home to.

What's the worst that can happen? You'll lose your job which as you've said already doesn't concern you a great deal. Honestly, I think you'd be mad not to go. I've been to the Caribbean before and loved it (not Trinidad tho) and am just looking for ways to get back.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 93 ✭✭oranjeboom

Ya my mate did say that they drink and drive all the time. He did say not to tell anyone at home but its the norm. They have designated drivers who only have a few pints!!!! Im not a massive drinker so Ill be the one who drives Id imagine. My mind is made up. The only thing now is to wait to see if our paperwork comes through and works out. Cross fingers and toes.

Fair play. Enjoy the place anyway, its very laid back out there !
