    Rather bizarrely.

    Is this common?
    Is this allowed?

    Am I dreaming...?

Pretty sure those things need planning permission...

Tell your brother next time around not to eat a tin of beans and stand outside around the back of the house.

Whereabouts in Sligo are you living Sueme?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,392 ✭✭✭TequilaMockingBird

Its been erected on top of Roemer Furniture, Pearse Road.

I'm not dreaming, all the neighbours are wandering around looking confused.

    Very strange.

how tall is it?i think if a structure
is under 14ft it doesnt need planning.Posted via Mobile Device

Its alot higher than 14', its hard to estimate as it seems to be on top of the building.

It follows you too. You know the way in some paintings the eyes seem to follow you as you move around? Ditto.

And my cameras SD card won't work after I took some shots of it.

I'd start building a bunker in my garden but, y'know... its watching..

    LOL :D

Thanks Sue! I spat out my tea reading that!

    Never a dull moment! :D

It may well already have planning, but no-one took any notice (or didn't see) the public notices. You can check the planning register database on the council's website.

Either way, I think they look really cool. Here's the ones in the Ox Mountains.

I think they look cool too, but I wouldn't want one at the back of my house......although they are much nicer then pylons.

I'd quite like to have one in the front garden.

Me too! If I had a front garden....... I love them too. We used to take the dogs to a beach in Holland where there was a row of the turbines, I also thought the noise was amazing.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 16,165 ✭✭✭✭brianthebard

The shadow caused by them can literally make a person crazy. Plus they sometimes make a lot of noise. If you do think that its annoying sueme I'd complain straight away.

In the cold light of day, it doesn't look as HUGE as I thought. Still big, and can't hear anything...yet.

Its quite soothing in a way.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,909 ✭✭✭bennyc

Is this allowed? Once they have planning , which I would be sure they have and its loo late now to object.

One question I it loud ? Am I corect in saying that when the wind is blowing very strong they run on motors to keep at a constant speed and you hear of people complaining about the noise.

    That is a scientific FACT!!!

I think it's cool - will have to check it out!

maybe you can run some wires down from it and tell the ESB to......

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 16,165 ✭✭✭✭brianthebard

Its not as bad as you made out originally Sueme, but it seems to be in a pretty pointless place, plus its on its own. Is it a publicity stunt? Anyone got any info?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,663 ✭✭✭JoeyJJ

we can't burn fossell fuels forever get used to it.

    MORE TURBINES !!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 16,165 ✭✭✭✭brianthebard

Firstly, fossil fuels were almost certainly used in the creation of the turbine.
Secondly, if its in a crap spot them it won't even contribute any meaningful amount of electricity.

Putting aside the possibility that it is a publicity stunt (Roemer getting into renewable energy widgets?), that fossil fuels were used in its' construction doesn't mean it wasn't worth it if it can pay for itself over its' lifetime. I've no idea whether it can generate a meaningful amount of electricity, but something like lighting a building doesn't take much, and if it can do that over a long term period then it'll definitely have been worth it.

The Geothermal system my sister is getting installed probably took a good deal of energy to construct and install but it's still very efficient and will save a lot of money and energy over its' lifetime. If the same can be said of the turbine then the bootstrapping energy is worth it.

The wind turbines are grande. Its these things that are springing up all over the countryside like viruses getting "fast tracked" that would be my concern

Just looking at the pic there of the ox mountains and the turbines don't do the view any favours. Is their any reason wind turbines are white? Surely a better finish can be applied so they don't stick out as much, or is there a rare sleepy headed low flying bird of prey that needs high viz sign posts?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,085 ✭✭✭Xiney

I actually love the view of the turbines :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,047 ✭✭✭Culchie

erm .... durr ....Roemer .....Dutch ......Windmill......economic meltdown .......Publicity:rolleyes:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,138 ✭✭✭takola

Have to agree with Xiney, I like the view of the turbines.

As long as it's not bothering you sueme it should be grand. Bit of an odd place to put it all the same!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 991 ✭✭✭Big_Mac

I spotted that yesterday too, thought it was odd.

Who knows, maybe bob roemer is feeling the pinch of rising energy costs and has to find an alternative? :p

Or........... maybe........... just maybe its a publicity stunt.

Afaik, if you generate electricity surplus to your own needs, the ESB have to buy it off you? Maybe its another method for him to make money?

no the esb doesn't buy it back from you yet,the greens were supposed to introduce this in government but they've been so dazed at being befriended by the older cool kids that they haven't done their schoolwork!

I've got one in my back garden. You don't need planning if it satisfies the following:

Wind turbines with a mast height of 10 metres and a rotor diameter of 6 metres will be exempt from planning permission requirements subject to the following conditions:

The rotor diameter should be 6 metres or less

There should be a 3 metre minimum clearance between the lower tip of the rotor and the ground

The minimum distance of a wind turbine from its nearest neighbouring boundary would equal the total height of the turbine plus 1 metre

Noise levels at the nearest neighbouring dwelling should be less than 43dB(A), or less than 5dB above background noise

Only one turbine is permitted within the curtilage of a house

The turbine must be situated behind the front wall of the house

All turbine components should have a matt, non-reflective finish and the blade shall be made of material that does not deflect telecommunication signals

No advertising materials or logos may be placed or appear on turbinesSo it gets easier, we had to apply for planning permission to our local council as we were well before this announcement as well as applying to the Electricity Supply Board (ESB) for permission to connect to the grid via the Inverter.

Hub Height I thought , the mast is maybe 500mm lower becuase the hub rotates on top !

The minimum distance of a wind turbine from its nearest neighbouring boundary would equal the total height of the turbine plus 1 metre

    so thats 10m hub + (6m diameter / 2 for radius =3m ) or 13m + 1m = 14m

Only one turbine is permitted within the curtilage of a house

a factory or warehouse is not a house

the 10m hub height rule also applies if the mast is bolted on the side of a building .

but yes, its much easier to install a turbine nowadays , Dick Roche (of all people) made it so .

Those details were plucked directly from the Dept of Environment web site in relation to domestic micro turbines. I couldn't find anything more official than that unless it's out of date... wouldn't be surprised

Most likely different for commercial ...

I recall hearing that the distance from residential boundary was reduced to 7 metres.

Update: The suspicious (very noisy) wind turbine was disconnected due to lack of planning permission. LOL.

did you make a complaint? You probably should when they retroactively apply for planning.
