Can anyone tell me what the maximum distance can be between the dish and the box beside the TV? I'm not very technically but is there something about the signal strength decreasing over a long distance of cable? I've estimated that the cable I would need would be about 12 to 15 metres. Is this a problem?

No problem at all, that is a relatively short distance so long as you are using proper satellite cable.
30 to 50 m might be considered long but possible with decent cable
