Can a normal DVD player play HD DVD?

    No they cant.

There are a few "HD-DVD combo discs" that have standard definition on one side, and HD on the other, and then SD side can be used in a normal DVD player, but there wont be any quality improvement.

Edit: Just to say, these 2 mentioned in the OP are not combo discs.

Thanks for that - just got a hddvd player this week for 10 euros in peats and looking for something to play on it... ordered transformers :)

There are a load of HDDvds on Amazon for about 4pounds each - but they wont deliver to Ireland.

Anyone know where else to look out for really cheap hd-dvds?

    ?

Amazon are selling Transformers HD for about £12 delivered here:

They also have Planet Earth for about £17 delivered here:

Be warned though. Asda usually drop their prices on HDDVDs when other retailers do and they have free delivery.

Amazon do deliver to ireland, i bought a few hddvds from amazon.com and amazon.co.uk.

Hmv.co.uk have some good prices for them, and theres an australian site called www.ezydvd.com.au but delivery is a bit pricey.

Yeah - Xbox HDDVD addon. Looks nice - awaiting something to play on it.

The real cheap stuff on Amazon (in the marketspace) mostly is not available for post to Ireland - but I kept trying and found a few that did:

I got bladerunner final cut, 300 and batman returns and a few others for 4 pounds each.

    :)

also found this site - real cheap - some great stuff - lots full boxsets for about $6- but postage is high. http://www.hddvdboxsets.com

Pictures dont do it justice, its the best hd video by a mile imo, nothing out now can touch its picture and sound, opening scene is what 50" 1080p are all about.

I never tire of that chig-chug-chug noise just before they transform, funny thing is I didnt think it was that good in the cinema, it was only till I got it in HD-Dvd that I thought it was class.

    Images of my copy :D
