Telephone Interview-asking them to call me back

I just received a letter regarding a position I applied for recently. The HR offices are in the UK and they request a telephone interview in the initial interviewing stage.

I have been given a number to ring and as it's an interview will may last between 20-40 minutes. Do you think HR will mind if I ask them to call me back on my land line as I don't want to be paying of for a 20-40 minute phone call to London?

They probably won't mind, but if you don't pay for it they will. Don't think it'll swing whether ye get the job or not, but i certainly wouldn't flag it as a problem unless there was no hope of me being able to pay the bill.

This seems weird. I do phone interviews at work and would never ask the candidate to call us. I doubt they would mind at all unless they are in some way dodgy!

I've had candidates return my missed call and ask me to give them a call back as they're on their mobile, I wouldn't hold it against them or even think twice!

No, it's not a dodgy company. I think it's more a case of wanting to have the interview at a time that suits me.

Ah, I'll just ask them to call me back.

I've had a number of phone interviews in my time and standard protocol is for them to agree to ring you at an agreed time.

    Contact HR.

I will, but that's what I'm saying, they're in London!

find some one you know with a BT landline package.

Free UK calls for up to an hour. save you asking the awkward question

Or use Skype - I'd say it would be no more than a couple of euro at most.

While it sounds 100% reasonable to ask them to call you back, I'd just be slow to do anything that could put them off you sub-consciously, no matter how slight the inconvenience to them.
