Any point in Applying?

Hey lads (and lasses). Just a quick question about cadetship application. Should I even bother applying if my eyes are not up to the standard? I'm long sighted in one and short in the other and am pretty sure both eyes would fail the test. This is really p1ssing me off as I'm in peak physical condition and it is this one thing that is holding me back. Im not suitable for surgery but would risk it to get in nonetheless but even that isnt an option yet due to the rules. For the moment ill have to make do with my contacts so am I right in saying applying is a waste of mine and the Defence Forces time? I have a bad feeling it would be.

If you have a year to waste to apply with the possibility of getting rejected then go ahead. But if you don't want to waste a year applying then I suggest you do not.
Have you tried the British Army?

It depends on what your corrected eyesight is. Have a look at the booklet on military.ie for the corrected eyesight requirements.

Get the corrected requirements from http://www.military.ie and go see an optometrist (sp?) and see if you meet the requirement. Cadets require grade 1 vision while recruits for general enlistment require grade 3 so if it's too bad for the Cadet School it may be good enough to be a private soldier. However, several little birds have told me that some have gotten away with contacts for the medical for their cadetship...

A little birdie tells me that there're officers with laser eye surgery too.

Willie in response to a question asked in the Dail has asked the medical corps to review the standards which he says "may take some time to complete" or words very similar to that.

So does corrected mean with contacts?

I'm not sure if it means that or just glasses tbh.

    http://military.ie/careers/booklets/CadetBook2008Eng.pdf

From the booklet they need to be corrected to not less than 6/6 in one eye and 6/9 in the other. I'm not sure who you'd ring to enquire about contacts, maybe try one of the manpower numbers or competitions section and say you're interested in joining up but have contacts.

Sorry to break it to you but if you don't have 6/18 or better in both eyes (uncorrected mind you) don't bother. You will not get through the medical.

I have been there and done that. If you are pining your future career hopes on seriously becoming an Army officer, you very much need need your **** in order. Any doubts or slip ups and all that effort will be for nothing. If you are not going to make it dont apply. it can be very dissapointing getting rejected by the Army.
