Thats lousy tbh.I have both consoles and i feel that the ps3 is just about overtakin the 360 around now.In game music would have been a fantastic addition

2.36 is live now, downloading as we speak

Thats going to be the best update the PS3 has had in a while. Interesting to see how the trophy system will work. I predict it to be wheeled out near enough to when E3 is occuring.

Finally the PS3 will be able to start competing with the XBOX in the interface departement.

anyone got any more details on 2.36 other than "The operating stability of some PlayStation 3 format software has been improved"??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,372 ✭✭✭ongarite

I heard it a security fix for some possible exploits in the PSX emulator.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,497 ✭✭✭Nick_oliveri

Xcross media bar or something similar. Its the theme or the OS that the PSP and the PS3 uses.
I swear to god if we dont have in game music from XMB in GTA and other games im going to be the first to eat my own head. I might even make a youtube video.

If the PS3 is such a powerhouse youd think it would be able to devote some resources to a small ass MP3 while in game. I mean in all honesty, Microsoft suing Sony for implementing a feature its always had into games... Down with this crap.
    wikipedia wrote:
Only six of the seven SPEs are accessible to developers as one is reserved by the OS.
Correct me if im wrong, but this means that there is a reserve SPE for the XMB. Not as if its going to slow down a game when the XMB is active playing MP3s.

To add to my disappointment, why are they making us download +100 megs of firmware when they wont tell us what it incorporates. I really couldnt be arsed.

They could just be honest and tell us that it fixes a possible exploit or whatever.

2.36 seems to be to stabilise some of the PS1 games that you can play on the PS3. Haven't read anywhere about it being a fix for software exploits though...

The In-game XMB (Cross Media Bar - the main menu on the PS3) has been asked for for quite a while now. Good that we're getting it. Not a fan of achievements in general but they may add to the games longevity.

Sony cannot implement a console-wide version of in-game music but they have created the tools for individual game developers to implement it into the games they build. Its up to the developers to actually use it not Sony.

Maybe I havnt noticed but does the time display when you press the PS button during a game? If it does fine, if not why havnt they implemented it already? It should be in as a standard.

No I dont think so. I think Microsoft have a patent on that so sony cant use it. Maybe Im wrong though.

They can have a patent on game feedback into a multi tasked music player at best. If there's no feedback from the game and you're just running a play list in the background then it's just multitasking. They can't patent that because it's too obvious an idea.

    Re. custom in-game music..

From the earlier leaks, it seems like this is the situation:

You will be able to use custom in-game music, but the game has to allow it.

You might wonder how this differs from the current situation, where developers can optionally allow in-game custom music. How it's apparently different from 2.4 on is that the option to allow in-game custom music will no longer cost developers extra RAM to use. So there'd no barrier to allowing it from 2.4, except perhaps creative reasons.

    That's the rumour anyway.

Both are too obvious to be patentable to anyone with a brain TBH.

Software patents are just ridiculous most of the time.

Well that was around the 80's I think but it shows how ridiculous the whole thing is.

Around the same time, the URL was patented (www.boards.ie is a URL for anyone that doesn't know, you'd be typing something like 67.76.67.76 instead so all its just text that finds a number, hurray!

Most of these are patents but people breach them every day and the patent holders do nothing because if they did challenge them the patent would be declared void because its an obvious invention.

I think Sony would win any challenge in this case.

Patents have to be enforceable as well as non-obvious. While I'd find the OS-based custom soundtrack system a dubious patent, it's certainly more novel than the double-click or multi-tasking. It's certainly more enforceable than both. There are many ridiculous patents out there- but they're irrelevant due to the impracticality of enforcing them.

Example: there is a patent on the idea of using a laser pointer to cause a cat to chase the beam for the purposes of exercise. The patent will not earn a penny for the owner unless a laser point is specifically built and marketed for this purpose. His patent does not extend to the pointer itself as it is not novel (there's likely a patent there already anyway), nor to any customer's use of the pointer as this is not practically enforceable.

Patents are certainly not ridiculous- it's just that some applicants really are. The expense involved in patenting an idea doesn't seem to deter some quite silly types who will never make money.

Most software patents are ridiculous. Things like user interfaces shouldn't be patentable.

The law won't change because it makes them crap loads of money but obvious things shouldn't be patentable. iTunes library browsing layout is patented.

There are crap loads of examples. I never said patents were ridiculous but these are and it should be way harder to get a patent.

Software patents should also only be valid for a shorter period of time given the pace at which the software industry moves.

Well I'm certainly not going to get into an argument about the time scales involved, but patents exist so that an incentive exists for innovation. If an idea cannot be turned into some form of property with protections there's little incentive to invent.

Yes I agree in theory but when it starts inhibiting innovation like it has in software and the computer industry in general, the system is obviously not working when applied to this industry and needs to change.

Patents were fine during the initial phase of the industrial revolution but should not be applied to industries that the model does not fit to.

My fave stupid patent. Kodak own the right to putting a numerical number representing percentage of battery remaining into a picture of a battery, you long was the patent application, couldnt have been that much longer than this post!!:pac:

EDIT: Btw im looking foreward to the trophies things! Will they be implemented into already released games too?

i absolutely detest the ideas of trophies and achievements, they are fecking lame, as people online will try play for them so hard that they'll cry when they don't get them or know they won't get them and then disconnect mid game leaving me very angry and saying "just play the ****ing game who cares about a little cup beside your fecking name".
