Earlier today i was discussing the concept of passive house's with a friend and how they use heat recovery in an airtight building. He pointed out a building regulation in Ireland which states that each room must have a 6" air vent. Are passive buildings not required to obey this regulation?

This question is more for /rec/home& garden/ construction & planning/

But heat recovery ventilation systems are permitted!, you do not need wall vents, just adequate ventillation. have a look in that forum ( & sub-forum renewable energies)loads of info on MHVR & Passive house design.

A 6" air vent is required as a minimum.

We have closable vents in our windows which meant we didn't need the 6" vent.

Plus! As far as I know! You don't need any vents at all if you install a forced air system. But the window vents wouldn't be a bad option to have too, just in case the system breaks down.
