Canon 450D or Olympus E420

    Hey guys,

Trying to decide on what's best between those two.

It's a present for my sister. She has an old 35mm SLR and has done a fair bit of photography in the past in college and would like to get back into it. I want something that she can get to grips with and grow into.

The packs I'm looking at come in at about 750/800 but the Olympus comes with two decent lenses whilst the Canon comes with a basic lense.

I've read the review, the technical buzzwords etc but I'm starting to think I can't see the wood for the trees anymore.

Any advice? Which one would you chose?

    All advice most appreciated :)

Id choose the canon over the olympus any day, even though Im a nikon user. Canon and Nikon lead the dslr race so you really cant go wrong by choosing either of them.

It's a present for my sister.

If it's for your sister, you might consider that the Olympus is one of the smallest, if not the smallest DSLR available at the moment and with the kit lenses the whole combo isn't overly heavy either. This might suit her hands more.

Either way, both are good cameras which take good pictures.

Would be much appreciated if some more of you folks could remember the point above.

Both are good cameras and I have the model the E420 is replacing, the E410, good and small DSLR and the twin kit is very good, 2 small light and SHARP lenses. If a little slow.

You mention that she already uses a film SLR, she may already have a brand preference following on from that and some compatible lenses! If you find out what she's shooting with it'll give you a good idea of what camera to go for. Basically all entry level DSLR's will produce fantastic pictures in the right hands and every brand has it's pro's and con's.

There are recent reviews of both cameras on http://www.cameralabs.com

They may currently lead the DSLR race but in the case of Olympus their lenses are top class from standard range through to the excellent (and expensive!!) top pro line. As any pro will tell you, bodies come and go but a lens will last you years. Also all the pro and top pro lenses are fully weather sealed, so need for all that plastic sheeting they seem to be using at Euro 2008

    /rant over ;)

Duff, Appreciate your point but its not entirely true that a lens will last you years, the way dlsr bodies are evolving these days you can quickly find that your old fav lens is extinct with a simple body change as happened to me recently when i changed to the d3.

I think you can still use it in DX mode...

    Thanks guys.

She had an old Nikon but I don't think she's too mad about the brand. And she doesn't really have any lenses she'd want to keep using.

I tried both cameras instore and I get what ye are saying re size. The Olympus is tidier. The guy instore was also plumping for the Olympus because he said that if we didn't need backwards compatibility with old lenses, the Olympus was the way to go cos it's got a far more advanced and recent lense system.

On the other hand, to me, Canon seem to have the better name. And looking on flickr etc. most 'budding amateurs' seem to be using the Canon than the Olympus (a wholly subjective appraisal I know but you know what I mean).

In an ideal world I'd get her a 40D - but it's just out of my price range unfortunately.
