Ibiza on my own?

Okay, this should be in Travel but we had an Ibiza question before so if that was allowed then surely this one is.

Now for the question, would it be safe enough to go to Ibiza on your own? I've never been and I think it's somewhere I would really like to go. But I would want to go on my own.

I know nowhere is ever completely safe but what do people think? Should I drag someone along just so I'm not all alone or would it be an okay place to fly solo to what with all the peace and love an' all that?

And, if you think it's not a place to go on your own I have a completely unrelated question. Anyone up for a week in Ibiza? :-)

    Cheers!

I went there last year and I defo want to go back maybe August or September. Since the people I know going this year are going in July and I can't get the time off work, I was think of simply heading over myself anyway. I feel like there's loads I still haven't managed to do over there so wanna go back.

When I lived in London, there was a party a few of us were DJing at it and one of our mates didn't want to go because of people who would be there there (from what I remember). Anyway, my mate disappeared off for the whole weekend. He decided to just go to Ibiza for the weekend on his own and had a great time and has done it a couple of times since too.

Obviously I feel it's better to go with somebody but depending on the kinda person you are, you wouldn't have much trouble meeting people there but do keep your wits about you because you just never know all the same but that wouldn't be much different to keeping your wits about you while your here either.

All in all, I feel it can be done and if you go for it, I'm sure you'll have a ball!

Yes, I have thought about going for just a few days instead of a whole week. That way I am more likely to leave still wanting more rather than getting bored halfway through the week.

I'm pretty sure I am the type of person who could easily flit around on my own. Definately for three or four days. Couldn't hurt that I speak Spanish, too.

    Thanks!

Yeah, was thinking the same myself.

The 26th of August which is Tuesday, Carl Cox is playing in Space. Last year he was animal and it was an expesive but great night. So then Wednesday recover a bit for the Thursday night which has Eddie Halliwell, Steve Angello, Axwell & Sebastian Ingrosso who are playing in Amnesia so was thinking of doing that and then getting home.

It will be mad timing because I'm planning on doing London on the 23rd for the SW4 gig if all goes well that I get a ticket by a mate over there and if he's going. That has Carl Cox and some other great DJs playing. http://www.southwestfour.com/lineup.aspx The SW4 thing is followed by the Notting Hill Carnival so then p*ss of to Ibiza afterwards.

He's playing in Dublin on the 25th of July too so getting to see him 3 times in the space of a would have me well happy!

Hopefully I can pull this off now....lol

That certainly sounds like a right laugh! If I had the money I'd be at a lot more things, but in September I'm going to Brighton to Fatboy Slims little shin-dig. So, if I do nothing else this year, at least I have that. Which I know will be animal!

What lil fatboy slim yoke is this. It's not Brighton Beach yoke is it. I thought I went to the last one which was in 2002. Crazy that was. I remember the firts year that it was on, there was around 20000 people or so, the following year, around 40000 and then the year I went, they were expecting around 50000 but a 250000 showed up. It was complete mayhem getting back to London but Jesus, it's not a day I'll forget.

It is indeed the Big Beach Boutique to which I refer. I'll bet the first one was a blast, less organised than they are now. This years one is a bit mad, it's spread out over the two days, Saturday and Sunday. It was to start really early at 4pm and end at 9pm but when I was getting tickets I was told that the times hadn't been confirmed yet.

Whatever times they end up deciding on, I'm just happy to be going!

I'm a girl, though. I don't know if that would make it any more or less dangerous but I thought I'd mention it in case it did...

that shouldnt matter one bit, there are other girls who go on their own, indeed we met some American girl Sandy 2 years ago who came on her own and she had a great time wirth us, still on touch as well the odd time via email.

Watch out for those Italian posers though, they really are a curse on Ibiza.

Go for it...I went on me own to Ibiza for a full two weeks back in 1999.I did my own thing in the day and met loads of clubbing heads from Cork over there..so was not on my own all the time.Stayed in a crummy hostel in the west end,got flight only for 160 pound direct from Cork!!
If you have spanish you are :Dlaughing!!!

need people. you'll feel awkward mixing but depending on the person you are maybe not....

like the flight alone, bus alone, etc, everyone else in groups.

when are ya thinking of going?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,006 ✭✭✭MistyCheese

I didn't have a specific date in mind. I reckon kinda late in the summer to give me time to book the days off from work and to save up some cash. Travelling on my own I don't mind, I'm used to that and I was thinking of going for just a few days, especially as it's a first time, it would be less overwhelming. I've never been on any kind of a holiday before.

I have Spanish indeed, I am Spanish!! I can even throw some Catalan at the natives. (Pitifully little, but no Irish person can give out to me unless they are able to speak Irish) I have no fear of telling anyone to:D "vete al infierno"!:D

No, I just wondered if it was a particularly dangerous place. I've since found a few people who are in the same situation as me. It might be an idea to have a more group meet-up, that way there's more chance of finding at least one person u can hang with.

I wouldn't be desperate to find someone to go with, I'd travel on my own, stay in a single room and just flit about to the clubs but I thought I should ask. See what the people who know think.

Well misty cheese if your Spanish yourself then you'll certainly have no problems meeting many people seen as you can obviously speak Spanish and your English is very good, i think we might be goig in September for a few days for some closing partys, whereabouts in Spain are you originally from?:)

Cheers for that forum Jonny68. I usually used that site to find out what was on and where with the calender but never noticed that there actually was a forum there!

Misty, go and have a ball. I have to say that when I went to Space, most of the people there were Spanish. I wasn't expecting that because I was staying in San Antonio and most of the people there we're mainly Irish, English and European.

    http://www.ibiza-voice.com/story/news/1507

"DC10 Circoloco to be shut for 57 days, on the orders of the Spanish government."

After a glorious start to the season the Spanish authorities have stepped in to quash DC10 - declaring last year's 60 day closure order must stand, and that the club which was closed for days last June has to serve the "remaining" 57 days of its ban.

Ibiza Voice spoke exclusively to Circoloco's Andrea Pelino, who is understandably devastated by the news. "I feel like DC10 is the monster of the island, like they hate us. I don't understand why this always happens," he says, audibly upset. The decision appears timed to cause maximum havoc to Circoloco. One-hundred plus security, staff and DJs have been contracted for the summer. Fans and friends have booked their holidays to Ibiza. All eyes are on the island and the message that will be flashed around the world tomorrow will - undoubtedly - be "drug den DC10 shut down."

"We bring people to the island all year round. People charter jets to fly to our New Year's Day party."

"The club was open all winter, and we were talking to the authorities, asking for their decision. You have to ask why they chose to shut us now,"Andrea comments. He is quietly angry, too. "We bring people to the island all year round. People charter jets to fly to our New Year's Day party. Circo Loco is around the world now. We work with great artists like Bjork and Massive Attack, we have parties in the best clubs all over the world. But here we're demonised."

First it was no after-hours… now the attitude seems to be "no" full-stop. There is only one thing to do: link up and fight back. "I want the support of the people. I would like to see 100,000 clubbers write to the government and ask 'why?'" says Andrea. Circo Loco will be fighting back, though. "Before I cooperated, I tried to do everything the government asked. But now I'm going to be strong. I have a lot of questions about this decision and I want answers. The situation is crazy. Circoloco started a movement in Ibiza. We brought the underground people together. This is ridiculous. I've put 100% of my heart into this club and I'm going to fight for it."

"Circo Loco was born in DC10 and it's not going to another club, never, ever..."

At the moment Andrea is wrestling with whether to close the club from Friday or to have a final party on Monday before beginning the 57 day closure. Whatever his choice his loyalty to the club is absolute and he firmly rules out a move to another venue: "Circo Loco was born in DC10 and it's not going to another club, never, ever. If DC10 is closed Circoloco is closed."

Why? Indeed. It defies belief that the Spanish government continues to single out DC10 for special treatment, that it continues to treat Ibiza's most important industry as if it were something to be ashamed of. Already the island is facing a quieter season than ever. So far, tourist numbers are 20,000 less than the same time last year. Club owners, promoters, bars, small businesses, hotels, taxi drivers… the entire economy of the island faces a crunch as the knock on effect from the after-hours ban is exacerbated by the economic downturn and unseasonable rain in the early season.

Ibiza needs DC10. These aren't just a couple of local discos, these are world-famous clubs that partiers from Argentina to Asia come specifically to visit. They are part of the lifeblood of the island.

Shutting them will deal the island an economic blow it won't recover from this summer, and maybe not even the next. What's more, the draconian police tactics will discourage visitors from booking in coming years, leading to long term repercussions. "It's crazy," Andrea says with a sigh. Ibiza Voice couldn't agree more. These clubs - they are part of our lifestyle, our music culture, they're where we celebrate music and freedom and the true spirit of Ibiza. If we lose them, we lose part of what makes Ibiza magical.

It's not just DC10, either. Amnesia - closed alongside DC10 last year - is in danger of being shut again as well, according to a source close to the club.

Post your comments, write letters, send emails… do whatever you can to make your voice heard. This is our freedom they're taking away - it's time to take it back.

Circoloco will be closed from June 23rd, we will keep you informed on a daily basis.

    Jonny, I'm from Barça!

I find very few people outside of Spain even realise the Catalan connection with Ibiza. I guess if you don't speak Spanish you wouldn't know that most place-names in Ibiza aren't in Spanish, they're in Catalan.

Barcelona is a great city, was there in 2006 for Paddy's Day.

So do you live in Ireland Misty?

As regards DC10 shutting, ive heard it's back open again, it's only 1 club anyway so not gonna make much difference overall, it's one club i didn't and wouldn't go to anyway because of the music policy (minimal:confused:)

    Fri 19/09/08 - Sat 27/09/08 for me.

Trying to get a flight to IBZ from DUB on the 19th and fly back to LDN on the 27th, head on down to Brighton from there to catch Fatboy Slim and then fly home after that.
