I've a late father-days present coming my way this lunch time, namely either GTA or MGS4. So dear fellow posters which should I get ?

I've played neither of the two franchises before, though I do like the fps genre, thief like games in particular. So which is the better of the two ?

I notice there's a online element to both?

Personal opinion leads me to say that MGS is the better of the two, with better gameplay, immersive atmosphere and compelling story.

However, if you have not played any of the previous MG's then I would suggest either getting GTA, cos it is a completely separate story to the rest of them and you won't miss anything, or spend a good day trawling through the MG wiki and youtube and picking up the stories (though I don't think that would work). Now I'm not saying that without the previous games MGS4 is worthless, but to get everything out of it, you need the previous installments.

It is a tough choice as both are action games, both have elements of FPS shooters, and both have some good online game modes.

Its very hard to pick which is better. But since you haven't played either franchise before, I'd suggest GTA4. MGS4 is an amazing game to play through, but is very heavy on plot and backstory, and for me personally it was the story of the MGS series that made it so amazing. Maybe rent MGS4 some time (it only takes 20 or so hours to complete, while GTA4 will likely keep you playing past the 60 hour mark due to its "sandbox" gameplay).

    GTA first, then MGS.

Because you'll probably question your violent tendencies after MGS4.

Thanks for the replies folks, in the end against advise I've gone with MGS, it just seemed more like my sort of game, although I'll certainly be giving gta a look see at some later point.

Make sure you are up-to-date with the story in some way anyway. Otherwise you might not appreciate the game as much. It would be like watching Return of the King and not watching the previous two. A great film on its own but a masterpiece when taken as a whole, with the others...

Enjoy anyway, and give MGO a bash too.

try and get some of the older mgs games second hand or something to get the full power of the story . MGS4 is the best game ive ever played and id rate it much higher than GTA4.

Replace your kids for kids that will actually fork out for the 2. So you dont have such dilemmas in the future..

MGS4 rapes nearly every other game storywise.. GTA is more fun.. in most case.. The story has been always meh for me..

I played all the MGS games and towards the end I was actually nervous to see what happens.. Really great experience/game
