I need fitness advice please

Right, I need to get fit. I work in an environment where I am often lifting people on and off stretchers. Also a bit of running.

What I need is some kind of fitness plan to help with this. I am 22 and to be perfectly honest, very unfit.

I am willing to put the work in to better my physical health and abilities but I don't know where to start.

What I need, ultimately, is greater upper and lower body strength. But I would also require some stamina to be able to do this for long periods - and I am confused as to where I should start.

Should I begin running some evenings and work on my stamina first? Or should I head straight in and begin weight lifting/squatting?

Ideally I would like a fitness plan from a pro, that I could follow to the latter which would make me achieve my goals within a year (or earlier). Would I need to join gym for this?

Can someone give some advice or point me in the right direction?

CrossFit would be an excellent means for you to imrpve your fitness.
    Check out www.crossfit.com or www.crossfit.ie.

You can start right away and if a workout seems daunting you can scale it down to something you can complete but that will still be very taxing.

    This is an excellent resource.

Something like some of the WODS on this site (here) such as the Bear complex would be perfect for you, as they combine strength with fitness training and will build up your stamina - a few sets of this and you will see what I mean! The videos on this site are also excellent demonstrations for technique. Join a gym and give some of these a go and see how you get on.
