the bookies are now refusing to pay out as i have left it so long

i was wondering can they legally do this? it is only a year and a half and a bet is a bet

what could i threathen them with to get a pay out?

After 6 months they can't guarantee payment. It is the rules.

I used to work in a bookies and after 6 months all bets are null and void. placing a bet with a bookmaker is in effect a gentlemans agreement (although this might sound strange) so you are subject to any rules they impose such as maximum payout (ususally 200/300k) and timeframe in which to collect (usually 6 months). Because the bookies make the rules theres nothing you can do from a legal standpoint. If you are a regular customer my advice would be to contact customer service for the bookie in question and ask for a discretionary payout as goodwill.
