The number portability system used by Ireland's mobile operators has been shown to allow someone buying a new SIM online to port any number to it, even if they neither own nor have access to the number.

    True dat.

When I went pre-pay -> bill pay, they did not ring my phone or text it to validate it was me at all.

I agree in ways, I rang meteor before to test this (approx a year ago) and asked to port my 02 number over, they didnt validate me or anything, did it again with another num from o2 moving to meteor and same thing again- no validation so i rang and asked for a manager and complained. I'm very surprised with vodafone porting a number actually to be honest as when i moved my 3 number over they sent me a 5 digit pin to move over which i needed to move over, now that i think of it I moved an 086 number back to 02 when they started free texts and the number was registered to a girl(known to me but obviously not them) who had given me her meteor number which i changed the details with meteor but not o2. A bit too easy too easy to access peoples information here too, If someone knows a persons name address and date of birth they can access someones account- I like three's verifiaction process tho- you select two passwords a name and another question of your choice- this is more secure.
