    Hi,

I am looking to take up rugby in october when I go back to college, was just wondering though what I should be doing for the summer. Should I be familarising myself with rules etc?

    Cheers

Meh, knowing the rules is optional for players. :p

Most clubs start pre-season training in July/August as the season starts in September/early October. If at all possible I'd suggest trying ot get involved with a club now.

As you're in college though starting there might be your best bet, as you'd probably be one of a number of newbies.

If you can get playing tag it might help you learn some of the very basic rules regarding passing and defensive lines, but the best way to learn the rules etc. is by playing.

Have a look at the IRB website. I think they have all the laws there. Best way I think is to just watch all the games you can. Since they miked up the refs, it's been a great way of learning. Apart from that, spend the summer running full tilt at a brick wall repeatadly. That'll set you up perfectly:D

Since you're a DCU student why not go down to the Bingham cup rugby tournament which is taking place there this weekend. Watch a few games etc.

You'll feel pain in muscles/parts of your body that you didn't know existed before. That's half the fun though, admiring the war wounds etc.

Keep yourself fit (suicides, endurance runs)

Body weights (Sit ups, press ups, burpees)

But don't burn yourself out, try to have fun.
Tag rugby is great for the basic rules.
