Roundabouts.

How do other countries manage heavy traffic?
Do they have as many roundabouts as we do?
Do they get as clogged up as ours?
I certainly doubt if they have traffic lights ON the roundabouts.
Just wondering if there is an alternative.

Bigger roads, better control systems. Better public transport to reduce private car usage. But often they have worst traffic (Holland) than here...

In South Korea traffic can turn left on a red light through a filter lane. There is no right turn at an intersection, instead you carry on past the intersection up to a designated U turn point, turn around joining the counter flow and then turning left at the lights. Makes loads of sense.
Its frustrating in traffice here why cars turning left here in Ireland are made wait in line with the rest holding everyone up.

Many states in the US have a 'right on red' rule too. Makes sense assuming people have cop on.

This is the same in the US, or at least parts of it.
You can usually turn right on red unless signed otherwise. (they drive on the right).

In some states, like Michigan there are a lot of junctions you can not turn left at and instead as magooly said, drive on up and do a U-turn.

Roundabouts are only useful where there is low traffic volume.
In the US they have started to use roundabouts in places but these are low traffic areas. They either replace 4 way stops (great fun but would never work with our attitude) or traffic light junctions.

What really drives me crazy is the idiots who drive up the right hand lane (jumping all of the traffic going straight or left) and go around the roundabout exiting to the left of the point where they originally entered. They brag about it.

I guess technically it's not illegal but it holds up the legitimately queueing trafffic even more.

No, not another debate on how to negotiate a roundabout.

This thread is about alternative solutions to the feckin things. (You should know ...it's your own thread :D)

Simple, drive more slowly, have lots of eye contact and be nice to one another.
