How is immigration dealt with if I enter the US and then 3 weeks later my return flight is from Vancouver?

you just need proof of your flight home and of course proof that you can support yourself while in US territory, ie - Money.

you will need to get stamped as leaving the us on your way out or else if you try and go back in a few years they will assume that you overstayed your visa or something stupid like that

Yeah Money will be a problem! I am a cheap person and never buy much and plan to be on a tight budget, guess I'll have to explain why I don't have much. On my J1 they never asked for proof of funds though

Money won't be an issue. It is a 3 week holiday and 99% of the time will not be asked anything about money.

The main issue will be that he does not have a return flight from the US. It can be tricky as in order to officially leave the US you have to leave North America (US, Canada, Mexico, adjacent islands). If you do not have a flight to Canada you may be suspect as to whether or not you are going to end up in Canada.

I was in a similar situation with friends for a trip later this year as we wanted to walk across the US-Mexican border and then travel on towards South America. But i was talking to the US embassy and i was told i'd need a flight to Mexico and then also proof of a flight out of North America within 90 days. But he said it is at the officers discretion so i may have got in without the flight to Mexico. But then again i may not. So i'd call up the embassy if i was you and just make sure you won't have problems on the day.

I've decided to fly out of Seattle its cheaper as most flights out of Vancouver seem to go to Manchester ()

The Canadian Airline are meant to take the green slip out of your passport and pass it to the american authorities.

I completely misread that, I'll be flying Seattle then crossing instead of flying to Vancouver, I'll have to ring the embassy.
