Irish Independent on 12th of June

Did anyone see the editorial comment on the front page of the Irish Independent? 'Why we need to vote Yes'. I thought that the day before a moratorium had been called on all media coverage regarding the Lisbon treaty?

I bought the Irish Times that day instead of the Indo, mainly because that editorial really pissed me off, and mainly because the Indo is a rag anyway. The Irish Times didn't have any articles or editorials which called for a Yes or No vote, though I may be wrong about that.

Shouldn't the Irish Independent have observed the moratorium too?

Broadcast media only. Its tradition not a law.

Yup, the moratorium doesn't apply to print media. The Irish Times may not have had an editorial calling for a vote one way or another but it did cover the campaign - the broadcast moratorium covers all coverage; neutral, bias or otherwise.

That is true (of the Irish Times), but their piece seemed to be more of an unbiased report of the facts than the Indo's editorial which was calling for a Yes vote. What I was thinking, was that the people who wanted to campaign for or against the Lisbon treaty could no longer do so after the moratorium, but factual reporting in the media could go ahead. Was just a little confused.

I was hoping there was a boards discussion on this issue! I saw that article also as if anything that pushed me more towards the NO side. A big article on the front of the paper like that campaigning for a yes was surprising and wrong in my opinion, I didnt expect the Indo to try and sway peoples decision
