Hi all I am looking at importing an 1983 Jaguar XJS from the UK and was wondering what the VRT would be if any on this car, its over the 25 yr mark just not sure if it is exempt.
Also is ther classic road tax for 25 yr old cars or do they have to be older, many thanks all:confused:

The car has to be over 30 yrs. old in order for it to be eligible for cheap VRT and cheap tax.

Oh no! Have they upped it from 25 years? :(

i'm considering bringing in an old Merc 230 CE or 240 CD but i've mainly been looking at early-80s models...

i guess the residual VRT would be tiny though...

I got this quick quote for an '83 XJS on the Revenue's online calculator.
    VEHICLE REGISTRATION TAX (VRT) ENQUIRY
Vehicle Registration Tax (VRT) Calculation. CO2 emissions input by Revenue.
    DATE: 07 August 2008 TIME: 12:46

    STATISTICAL CODE: 40286913
    MAKE: JAGUAR
    MODEL: XJS 4.0
    VERSION: 02DR A / SPORTS COUPE (NON-CONVERTIBLE) / AUTOMATIC / PETROL ONLY /
    CO2 EMISSIONS: 287
    MILEAGE: 100000 MILES
DATE OF FIRST REGISTRATION: JUNE 1983

    OPEN MARKET SELLING PRICE: €8010
    RATE OF TAX: 36%
    VEHICLE REGISTRATION TAX:
    (payable on enquiry date) €2883
If you have documentary evidence that the CO2 emissions differ from the above, you may enter the CO2 emissions in the box provided and recalculate the VRT by selecting the Recalculate button.
The only way to really know the cost is to call them, however.

it was always 30 years....and rthe minimum VRT on a less than 30 yr old car is 27% of the Irish market value...

The first bit sounds right, but the second bit is cobblers.

If you don't have any emissions evidence that the Revenue will accept then it's 36% OMSP subject to a minimum of €720.

    Revenue Page VRT1

Which is a lot different to the old system of 22.5%-30% OMSP (depending on engine size) subject to minimum of €315. (I think those figures are correct, if not, they're in the right ballpark)
