Played in around a month or so back. Lovely course but tough (that said I played in strong winds). The greens are in lovely condition but are very, very tricky and were fast and undulating. Its long enough and you will be playing low to mid irons into the par 3s (again depending on the conditions it might be a bit better)

    Enjoy it!

Been longer since I played it but found it good. Had a calm day last time out and played middle tees, which wasn't too bad. it is a monster from back ones. Think I hit 6, 5, 5 and 8 for par 3s which would be a lot more than most courses from middle tees.

Otherwise mostly it played average length for me as was driving well but it is tough as greens are fast and you may be leaving yourself long putts to stay away from trouble playing in to greens. The 4th and 13th are nice par 3s and they both have water around greens and there is at least 2 other greens very close to trouble. If you are in doubt about hitting a green after a poor drive then lay up. They are very hard to hold from a long way out and you could easily short side yourself or hit the green and roll way off it leaving a tough up and down.

Not slagging off elmgreen graeme, but would say it plays 10 shots or so harder from middle tees at 6800 yards with a lot of water around. Elmgreen is only 5800 from the back tees I think? If you aren't driving well at you will be left with a lot of rescue clubs into tough greens and will bleed shots quickly.

Cheers for the help copacetic, very helpful! Looking forward to playing it. Got a practice and then a match there next week. Hopefully get a better idea of the greens during the practice.

McDonagh I played Navan twice last year and it was in good nick, but found it very, very boring. Couple of nice holes, but wouldn't rush back. The up/down up/down stretch on the back 9 is incredibly dull. More John Major than Mickey Mouse.

I think you need to check your length figures too. 6890 metres? That's just 100 yards or so short of Torrey Pines.

I'd much rather drive 10 miles up the road and turn right into Headfort. Now that IS a mans course off the back tees.

How did Navan come up anyway?

Played it there yesterday in the Barton Shield. Fantastic course. Played off the back tees in the gale force winds and the rain so was playing very tough.

Some great holes on it though. You're right about the laying up on some holes though Copacetic. On the 5th i had around 190 yards left into the wind and rain, no point risking the ponds so just laid up. Course management is very important round there.

Probably as well groomed a course as i've played over here and the greens were superb.

I had the unfortunate job of caddying around there yesterday! My god it was a caddies nightmare! First 6 holes were unbelievably tough due to gale force winds & lashing rain.

When it settled down a bit though the course really was in smashing shape. Greens were quality and it held itself up very well in weather which other courses would have no doubt have been called off.

Very reasonable prices i heard too. Going to try arrange a game there soon.
