Protein Shakes

I am training with a top Irish Tug of War team three evenings a week. These are hard 2 hour sessions. We also need to watch our diet as we have to get the strongest teams possible into the various weight categories.
The body can be sore and drained after a session like that and you do not be recovered in time for the next training session. Would it be a good idea to take a protein shake three times a week after training? Would this help the muscles recover in time for the next session? Training is over late (11pm), is it a bad idea to take a shake before bed?

For muscle recovery you require more than just protien.
To recover, muscles need to replenish their diminished glycogen stores, this is what drinks like Lucozade sport are supposed to do.

People who train with weights would generally take some sort of protein as well as some sort of simple carbs after training. So a protein shake and some lucozade, or a protein shake with a simple sugar added (like dextorse/glucose etc), or there are also specigic recovery drinks that are pre mixed. Generally with a carb : protein ratio of 2:1.

take casein protein if you are supplementeing late at night as opposed to whey. you'll find it works a little better

This stuff is definitely not great...it's expensive for what it is and only has 16/17 grams of protein.

Do you think that I would be better off with some lucodade sport and a protein shake instead after training?

To be honest...probabaly. I mean ideally get yourself a protein shake( 30gms of protein ) and a handful of carbs immediately after you workout. If i was to recommend a good recovery drink which tastes awesome and has plenty of protein in it and completely eliminates DOMS for me and is also very cheap...I would recommend Nutrition X Ram. This is what I have tried and what works for me totally. PS: ONLY IN ORANGE Flavour...the other flavours are horrible in my opinion

How they can call a recovery drink with 16gms of protein a recovery drink is beyond me...maybe for old people who go for little walks...but that's not a recovery drink for someone like yourself who spends two hours breaking their absolute balls...as it would not be ideal for anyone who goes to a gym and spends an hour or two lifting intensely and working hard...no way.

Since when was reading the backs of nutrition labels only for experts? Unless you can't read, or do basic addition...you will see that for what you get, that Glanbia stuff is a rip off.

And this is coming from someone who knows people who work for them endorsing the product. It's a load of crap.

    HIS attitude.....????

He's right. You keep pimping this product while admitting to being a newb, and still getting offended and defensive if someone offers good soild reasons as to why it's not good.
