Anybody been to Tours? (that's Tours not tours!)

Thinking of Tours for my francophile jaunt of the summer, probably two to four weeks depending whether I can find a language course.

Anybody been? its sounds like a nice town, small enough to be convenient for a foot traveller but large enough to have plenty of decent restaurants and bars. I've heard the Loire valley is very nice, and La Rochelle is close by if I wanted to get out.

It'll be in July and start of August. does anybody know if it will be excessively busy with tourists?

Tours has a vieux quartier that is pleasant enough, but not fantastically interesting, a cathedral that they are proud of, and a railway station that I think is very nice. That's it. In other words, there is nothing much wrong with it, but it is short of things to draw people there. For that reason, the answer to your last question is no.

I suggest that you check out Angers as a possible alternative. Personally, I like Saumur a lot, but it might be just a bit too small for a four week sojourn.

I like the Loire valley greatly, but think it would be difficult to get the best out of a visit there without your own transport. And you don't need to bolt as far as La Rochelle for a break.

Tours is a wonderful town to use as a base to visit the surrounding area and it also has a high % of Irish/British pubs which outside of Paris can be a useful thing to meet locals.

    Hmmmm

I'm considering going to Lyon now as well, they have better language options although I've fairly explored it already when I was there for 3 weeks last summer.

Well up to you if you want to go to somewhere you already know or not I suppose.

I like Lyon but I've been there too many times before I suppose. I like Tours but I've never spent more than 3 days there so can't say if it would get boring after 4 weeks or not.

I'd still say to stick to Tours.
