Amp or rc helicopter - Which should I get first?

I have some top notch headphones but at the moment no amp. I am looking to get a fairly serious DarkVoice 332 headphone amp which costs about 250 euro. The amp should transform the headphones.

I also want to get an rc helicopter though.

I'll probably get the amp first though. What dya reckon?

I can only get one this month as I need most of my money for a welder.

I got an rc helicopter for xmas off the brother. tbh, they're not all they're cracked up to be... Any gust of winds takes over control of it and you end up having to walk for ages to collect it.

€250 would be better spent on a big bag of skank.

Maybe your just not into that sort of thing??

I have an rc car and plane already and de r fairly cool. I'm going to get an electric powered heli so I can use it indoors during the winter.

I have a 100 watt trace elliot bass amp in my house. When I play something on it, stuff falls off shelves.

    Amps rule.

OP flip a coin or make a decision

    Now onto a better question

Which hand should I hold my mug of tea with at my tea break, I can only hold it with one hand because i have only one mug and wont be getting a new mug until next month.

    So what should I do?

Here's a picture of the darkvoice. As you can see the tubes stick out the top and you can see them glowing while in use. Wicked.

    Helicopter is the obvious choice.

You can get good at flying it, attach a hook to it, and use the hook to grab the amp from a shop and fly it back to you. - No CCTV will ever be able to recognise you, becuase you're nowhere near the shop. The perfect crime.

Ha Ha. Very good. I don't think the helicopter would have the range though seeing as i'd have to fly it to a warehouse in the UK.

Maybe it's possible to get an amp that's also a helicopter?

I'd get the helicopter, an amp for headphones just seems pointless.

The amp will make the headphones sound much much better.

Consider for a second that a good set of headphones can give you the same sort of sound you could get from a normal home system costing in the region of of thousands.

Some kind of Amp Test would be a good idea ;)

Yeah solid state amps do. Good phones need a good signal and lots of power to sound right. The cheaper amps have less than satisfactory components which jepardise the sound.

A tube amp is a different story as the sound is changed by the tubes. You get a more warm sound from tubes.

For example I have sennheiser HD650 phones. You need an amp to make them sound right. They need lots of power and a good signal coming through.

Heck even the cables make a difference to the sound on a high end setup. The zu mobius cable (for connecting headphones to amp) makes a massive difference apparently and costs over 200 euro.

Basically, amps make a big difference.

well why are you buying an amp when you are selling your cans

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,582 ✭✭✭✭kowloon

I know someone with their own studio and he told me that most consumer sound equipment is just a big scam for people with too much money.
He reckoned 95% of people couldn't tell the difference between a several grand bang & olufsen sound system and a several hundred quid regular brand with the settings the same and without seeing the actual units.
It was his opinion that only a tool would spend so much on such a system when the acoustic qualities of the room you put it in has more effect than any perceived sound quality improvement.

    Helicopters are just cooler. :D

Eh I think I'll take that ad down this evening. I've changed my mind. It's hard to have money for everything but feck it now I'm going to get the amp or I'll regret it and end up buying another pair of the same phones in the future.

I'm by no means an expert on this subject but I would imagine the sound wouldn't be much different between a few good few hundred and a couple of grand.

Once you get up to the higher cost you don't get as much value for your money. For example you could get maybe 70-75% better (than mainstreamy stuff) when spending a good few hundred and then after that you are paying big money but the percentage increases are much more minute.

I don't know much about acoustics but room acoustics don't matter for headphones. My headphones were a couple of hundred but there are phones out there that cost a couple of grand.

HD650 (my headphones) w/ DV332 (amp I intend to buy) - about 6-700 hundred euro setup and there would be a massive difference from cheapo phones.

Spend a couple of grand and there won't be a massive difference between it and the HD650 - To the untrained ear. But to a trained ear it could be worth the money. Of course most peoples are untrained so it would be an absolute waste for them.

Completely forgot it was for earphones! :o

Still think the helicopter is better.

    AMP.

Just download an RC helicopter simulator and try it out.

    1. It's hard as crap to control.
    2. You will get bored of it, quite soon, while with the amp, everytime you will listen to music, you will have that warm feeling that you purchased the right thing.

if I were you (which i'm not) i'd get neither and buy me (who would be you but actually isn't) a keyboard. a pretty one with LED lights too.

It is, but how many will you break before you master it, do you really want that much of a "commitment"? buying parts, rebuilding.....

Yeah. I'm into that sort of thing. I definitely am going to get it. It's just a case of which one first.

Ah I'll get the amp first.

    Oh k,

But I still believe AMP is a better choice... so good choice.

BTW, what helicopter are you thinking of getting? make/model.

Gonna get a logo 10 electric for starting off. Plenty of spares available and upgradable. As recommended by coolwings (from the models forum) hobby shop.

where will you buy that, how much does it cost ?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,460 ✭✭✭workaccount

I'll probably buy it in from abroad for 300 euro odd. If you like the thought of being able to go down to the store when it breaks or local support then get it from http://www.greenhobbymodel.com/

Norman (coolwings from models forum) owns green hobby and model and is very very knowledgable. He was even on TV recently.

Well, I don't know in what price range is Logo 10 but,

Ever since I saw this vid,
    http://ie.youtube.com/watch?v=p8t41avFuCc

I'm in love with Trex 600, by far the most maneuverable helicopter I've seen.

Trex heli's are class but there expensive aswell. You can't really go that wrong with coolwings advice though.

I'd imagine there would not be a huge difference anyway between the logo 10 and some trex's. All 3D heli's can do the maneuvers in the video you linked aswell I think.
