Called for an Interview - Life's not fair!

I've been thinking for some time that lecturing would be a great career move. And I’ve just received an email inviting me to give an interview and presentation for a full lecturer position (I also applied for a junior lecturer role with the same closing date).

Sound good? No – it’s a disaster. I accepted a role (effectively number 2 in a large indigenous Irish company) starting 23rd of June. I didn’t think I’d get this job – which is a smashing job too to be fair – and it would be really bad form to back down at this stage, never mind when I’m a month or so into the job which is likely to be the time I would get offered the job at the University if suitable.

I’m going to mull it over until tomorrow before replying although I’m pretty sure it’s a hopeless case.

The positive I’m taking out of this is that the university considered me suitable for interview, which means I could come back in a couple of years time and reapply when (if) such a position opens up again.

    I’m gutted to be honest!!!

I had a somewhat similar episode.

I was working in an Institute of Technology, not too long ago, on a yearly contract. Just before we finished up for the Summer, the head of dept. said to me that he couldn't guarantee me a position in September, it was all down to student numbers.

So, with a mortgage and all that, I started looking at 9-5 jobs, and of course, the day after I accept one, the head of dept. rings me back and says he wants me back in September.

Needless to say, I couldn't really go back to the IT after accepting the 9-5 job. To say I was gutted would be an understatement.

I've pretty much given up on ever getting a full-time lecturing position now. :(

It's the 9-5 slog for me.

I've known nothing else, so maybe that's a good thing - Don't know what I'm missing.

I know I should be grateful for getting the job I will be starting (and I am), it's just... :(

    Thanks, Tom!

Why can't you go back to another job? 'unforeseen personal circumstances' etc
