Right, it's summer and there's fup all on worth a damn, time for some new box-sets. What should I get my hands on boardies?

    Shows I love(d):
    • West Wing
    • Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip
    • Firefly
    • Space: Above & Beyond
    • House
    • Band of Brothers

    Shows I like(d)
    • Lost
    • Entourage
    • Las Vegas
    • Doctor Who
    • Black Books
    • The 4400
    • Heroes

Shows I gave up on mid way through a season:
    • Jericho - season 2
    • Oz - season 4
    • Prison Break - season 2
    • 24 - season 2
    • Battlestar Gallactica - one episode before the finale of season 4

The Office (see forum sticky) and Dexter to name two.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,367 ✭✭✭✭Sleepy

Hmm, The Office was okay, peep show I found too contrived, mighty boosh I think I just didn't 'get' the humour of....

30 Rock I know nothing about - will look it up.

Dexter looks quite good, will give it a whirl.

    Any drama suggestions?

The Wire is just the most amazing show around and one which pretty much everyone here loves.

I've been enjoying Numb3rs lately. Watched season one over the course of two evenings and am currently devouring season 2.

Bones is quite excellent, though season 3 does jump the shark.

The Dead Zone is highly recommended. You can pick up the seasons for between 18 to 25 euro these days and are well worth a watch.

Dead Like Me is worth getting into especially given the release of the film in a few months time.

Psych is great switch off your brain and enjoy TV.

Odyssey 5 is a great little Manny Coto sci fi show about a group of astronauts sent back in time and given 5 years to prevent the worlds destruction. Never got a chance but the DVD is dirt cheap and a decent watch.

Blade the Series isn't too bad though it was cancelled just as it was getting interesting.

Wonderfalls is perfect for anyone who likes Bryan Fuller's new show Pushing Daisies. It's a little less whimsical but just as good.It also features Lee Pace and the amazingly hot Caroline Dhavernas.

Nightmares and Dreamscapes is a mini series based on the Stephen King short story collection. Some truly amazing episodes in it and it can be got for about 12 euro.

It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia is a must watch. The funniest most unpc comedy in years.

The Lost Room is another mini series which really should have got a series. A great idea backed up with some fantastic writing and Peter Krause is on great from.

How I Met Your Mother is a fine comedy which features one of the greatest characters in sitcom history. Worth picking up just for Neil Patrick Harris as Barney.

Supernatural is well worth getting your hands on. It's been going from strength to strength in recent months and has the ability to become the show The X-Files promised to be.

The Kill Point an 8 episode mini series from last summer is something you really should pick up. It was released on DVD over here a few weeks back and manages to be gripping and original for its duration.

The Sopranos is arguably the greatest television drama series ever. I've seen every episode and I certainly think it is. Top notch writing, acting and directing.

If you want a comedy, Arrested Development is, in my opinion, the smartest and funniest one ever.

you cant go wrong with six feet under its a fantastic show

or maybe Deadwood I personally didnt like the gratuitous use of foul language in the 1st season but ignore that as it worth it.

and another vote for The Wire a slow burner but worth it

and of course two more you mentioned The Sopranos best show EVER and the excellent Dexter

The Wire is the best tv show ever made, the Sopranos then in 2nd.

Others worth watching-Dexter and get back into Battlestar Galactica, this season (four) has been very good, and since you missed the last episode of season 3 you kind of missed a giant reveal-four of the final five cylons.

Oh ment to also recommend Babylon 5. It simply cannot be beaten and is right up there with The Wire as greatest TV show ever. You can get the complete collection here . You simply won't get a better deal on a show anywhere.

Absolutely agree with this. Brilliant acting, hilarious scripts and not half as sentimental/mawkish as American sitcoms tend to be.

For comedy I'd also recommend Flight Of The Conchords. Really dry humour and surreal music videos! Murray Hewitt is one of the greatest sitcom characters ever!! :D

Couldn't agree more, Flight of the Conchords is genius. Murray is ridiculously funny.

Drama - The SOpranos, The Shield, The Wire. You can't do better than that.

Comedy - Extras, Arrested Development, Spaced - 3 great sitcoms, quite different from anything else on TV.

My Name is Earl s.2 sucks, but the 3rd season is not that bad.
Reaper is cool, and before Reaper there was "Dead like me" dark humour finest.
Journeyman is the nice series, once you'll get through the first episodes.

Really? Personally I think it's absolutely shite and not the least bit funny. After watching about 5 episodes I now turn it off every Monday night. I'd love to punch that Tracy clown.

OP, watch some Boston Legal, Burn Notice, Dirty Sexy Money and Californication. Kept me entertained on many a week night.

Some great choices so far esp. Spaced, Extras & The Wire ...

I would add ... Now & Again (only got 1 season & was cancelled ... last ep ends on a cliffhanger so it's fairly annoying)

Millennium (A lot of good episodes but some dross),

The Outer Limits for sci-fi action ...

7 Days if you can find it for some time travelling fun ....

Red Dwarf is my favourite Comedy Series ...

Check out the Blackadder Box set also ... excellent stuff ...

Titus is a fairly good American Sitcom ...

The Job is a funyn & enjoyale Denis Leary cop show. Fairly good ... kind of a precuror to Rescue Me ... kind of.

And last but by no means least ... Lucky Louie... fraking hilarious American sitcom!

Forgot to add ... Sliders ... Brimstone & the wonderful Early Edition ... oh & Due South .... & Strange Luck

Flight of the Conchords - musical/comedy, one of the best new shows. You might find some "sample" clips on YouTube.

Green wing seems to be often overlooked. Personally I thought it was the best British comedy show since Faulty Towers

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 451 ✭✭Gross Halfwit

I forgot Garth Merenghi's Darkplace ... Man To Man With Dean Learner ... & The IT Corwd ... all exceptional comedies!

And Farscape ... great show & most of the cast are now in Stargate!

Wow, great response to the thread guys. Thanks! :D I've watched bits and pieces or followed a lot of the series mentioned but there's still loads there I'd be interested in, just had a brain freeze when sitting in front of google trying to come up with TV shows I might like...

No way my credit card can take all that so gonna have to just get one or two at a time. Have The Sopranos coming on a loan in about a month so gonna give the Wire a shot in the meantime and after watching the 2 min webisodes of Battlestar Galactica Razor, I'm gonna dig out Crossroads part II and look out for Season 4 :)

Should keep me occupied for a while!

You can't go wrong with a bit of CSI and Family Guy.. Grey's Anatomy is good if your into that sort of thing...

If you like BSG, you will [hopefully] love Babylon 5[As I've always thought of bsg as natural suceeder to Babylons 5 crown as greatest tv show ever, but that has been dashed with bsgs awful season 4].
Babylon 5 had it all- fantasic writing, awesome storylines, great acting, an arc that was developed sensationally and was concluded in an extremly satisficing way.

Arrested Development is the finest US comedy ever, simply flawless for the majority of its run. ''But remember, its called an illusion. A trick is something a whore does for money'' :D
How I met Your Mother is brilliant just for Barney[as someone in this thread already pointed out] Neil Patrick Harris is god, he even makes the Harold and Kumar movies extremly watchable.
For uk comedy, you can't beat Peep Show. Season 5 just ended, and you can pick up the first few seasons on dvd for pretty cheap.

For the us serials/dramas, Dexter is untouchable atm.

+1 for The Wire, I just started watching the first season; I'm about halfway through season 1 and can't get enough of it!

On the Wire stick with it. Watch all of the 1st season even if it feels like your struggling at times, wasn't into myself for the 1st few episodes but by then of Season 1 I couldn't get enough.

BSG has a brilliant end to S3 and a good couple of episodes at the start of S4, then goes mediocre for 4 or 5 episodes before putting some good episodes together. The finale to the first half of S4 just aired and it is possibly the best episode ever of BSG.

I thought it was a great season, the only bad thing I could say about it was it was for the most part unnecessary, they could have ended it after Season 4. Maybe it was necessary to set up Crusade, I don't know, have not seen Crusade yet.
But, as I was saying, certainly not the best season, but still a good 'un.

There's always Japanese anime. It's a nice change.

    Neon Genesis Evangellion
    Death Note.
    Cowboy Bebop.

maybe try Rah-Xephon instead of evangelion, but bebop and death note are awesome
