Started today with most of the Big Nations getting expected wins. Sadly tv coverage is fairly ****e and Setanta are showing Wales and Italy rather then the Argies Ireland match. Argentina went on to win 17-9 Ireland.
Seems like a very depressing time in the youth set up.

Ah it not that bad we did win a U20 Grand slam last year. The current group would be considered pretty weak, so the loss is not surprising really.

    not a good vintage.

Have only heard of one or two of them myself...

I'll watch the ABs match, but I'm really not expecting too much. Good luck to them.

Watching the Wales/Italy game I thought that Wales seem to have some very talented young players coming through

Its a real pity this is on over the Leaving cert.
All the decent talents in my opinion were in this years Senior cups.

That castletroy centre for one, few pres players aswell.
From watching the leinster senior cup on setanta down here, I would have said they are missing some exceptional talent from the likes of belvedere, cbc monkstown and st.marys.
Also that Ulster giant, the prop, dunno his name.

On that note... how is Dave Kearney progressing?

I just remember him outclassing Newbridge when he played us with Clongowes... Ive heard some say he's potentially better than Rob

If he's half as good as Rob I'd start him against Oz next week.

Ye he was boshing people in the senior cup last year with ease.
Not sure about his pace tho, but he has a great boot.

Definitely will be seeing the brothers play together for ireland one day

Ireland playing well but NZ are..well the two wingers started for the crusaders last week in the S14 final. Men against boys is right.

Just tuned in, some bright spots for us, but the NZ defensive line is very quick.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,958 ✭✭✭✭RuggieBear

the kiwi backs are stronger than our forwards and their forwards are quicker than our backs....and let's not mention the disparity in skill levels

    oh and ref is woeful.

34-3 Tongans lasted longer then us

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,172 ✭✭✭NaiveMelodies

    our backs showing some promise.

I've seen the workout programmes the Irish youth do and its a farce really.

They don't do heavy weights at low reps which is the quintiessential thing to do in order to build strength and body mass instead opting for high reps of low weight which is far less effective.

What we need to do is start them on effective programmes from the age of 15 so by the time they're 25 they will have 10 years lifting under their belt and as a result will be stronger and bigger. Thats what all the other successful nations do.

I mean honestly stuff like shoulder press with 10kg dumbells on a medicine ball isn't going to improve your strength or mass! Its what women do! and thats what are youth are doing! what a joke.

But of course if we were to put youths on effective programmes we would hear the ignorant views of the general public saying "It will stunt their growth" (which is untrue) or "It will give them a heartattack to get that big at that age" (hysterically untrue)
I mean did anyone see the article in the independent the other day? It linked Lomu's weight training with his kidney disease!!!
unfortunately we feel the need to only properly develop our youth physically at 20-21 mark but by that time generally they are playing 'catch up' with other players from other countries

    Just sums up everything.

There are probably many things which we should do, but what we need is a cohesive plan which ensures we have a steady supply of elite players.

Relying on the pitiful amount of about 30 schools to supply the future of Irish rugby is a joke.

There was an article posted up here a while ago, about a speech given by one of the local clubs outlining the pitfalls of our system, if anyone can remember it - please post it up again.

Schools are a joke imo the quality of the competition is dire its 10 man rugby through and through. Look at the lines and moves that NZ were running last night it was like the senior team. Compare that to us crash ball crash ball give it to the forwards.

Its a major issue for us at the moment so many teams (clubs and schools alike) are taking the lazy route of 10 man rugby and its stumping the quality of players that will come through.

I agree its 10 man rugby to a certain extent... but saying that its "stumping" the quality of players that come through is ridiculous considering we've produced some of the best backs in the world in the past 5-15 years.

Ronan O'Gara, Brian O'Driscoll, Gordon D'arcy, Geordan Murphy, Denis Hickie, to an extent Shane Horgan, Luke Fitzgerald is well on his way. Considering the number of people playing rugby in this country I'd say that thats about as good as we can expect.
