Computer freezing after start-up

I have a Dell Dimension C521 running XP Home. Increasingly, it is freezing shortly after start-up, i.e. it will allow me to access the internet or a program and then freezes. It can only be cured by actually turning off at the computer's on/off switch and restarting, then it will work perfectly until the next time. Just wondering if this is a hardware or virus problem.

How many anti virus programs do you have installed? You should only have one (This symtom can be cause if theres more than one installed), if not do a few malware/virus scans in windows safe mode and see what it brings up,

Thanks for that Yoyo. I only have Avast anti-virus but I do have two spyware guards only one of which runs at start-up. I did the scans in safe mode, nothing but a few cookies.

Spybot S+D and Webroot Spysweeper. I never bothered to uninstall Spybot after I got Spysweeper.
