    Hi all,
There has been a thread about this before but i've read conflicting reports...
I'm in the middle of bringing over a 30yr old kombi from America. I rang up my local tax office and the lady said all that i would have to pay is 50euro once its over 30yrs old,
but after reading on this site that i'm going to have to pay 10%euro import duty and then i think 17% when it lands in belfast from where i bring it across the border to 50euro to register it!

When i added up all these i was sick!:(:(

Has anyone done this? I've given as much info as possible to get acurate responses

    thanks
    Rothai

I'm not sure what the exact customs duty %'age is, but my guess it would be payable on it's arrival in Belfast.

Perhaps the 17% refers to VAT which you will have to pay? Irish VAT (payable on any goods entering the EU for the first time - regardless of age) is 21%. Maybe the UK equivalent is 17%? I would be surprised it they were that different though.

Note - VAT is (in Ireland) 21% on the cost of the combi plus transport costs.

When I imported from Japan, I was charged
    10% Customs and Excise,
    20% VAT
    Docks fee,
    Brokers fee.
    €315 VRT.

You should only pay VAT and Customs once in the EU.

yep, anything from outside the EU is liable to import duty and VAT at teh source of its landing - in your case Belfast.

sorry to rub salt in, but teh Import and VAT is added to teh total cost of landing so your vehicle, your transport costs adn any transport insurance you may have paid

    Isn't the WTO great

I've just brought a bus in from California via UK and payed 17.5% on the total inc. shipping upon landing in Felixstowe.

No duty as it was built in EU.

    €50 VRT.

Watch out for handling, unloading, storage fees etc. they all add up - I got an 'all-in' price before shipping. ;)

    Get some pics up :D

Do you mean no VAT? I can understand if it was first registered in the EU and brought to the US, but if it was first registered in the US it should have been liable. (I paid on a FIAT that was built in Italy, but sold first outside the EU).

Good for you though if you didn't get charged. :)

Sorry, just checked my paperwork -

Import duty, EU built vehicle - flat rate of £50
VAT - 17.5% on total inc. shipping

This applies to shipping to a UK port.

    €50 VRT here in Ireland.
