Wasn't sure which forum to put this in but I don't think After Hours has ever had a thread about drugs before so I'll stick it here, (feel free to move.{never sure why people say that, would it not get moved if you didn't give your express permision or something?}).

I was just wondering if anyone else watched this last night and what your thoughts on it were. I know Primetime can be a bit hit and miss but I was pretty impressed with it.

I only saw a chunk of it (mainly the bit in South America dealing with growers), hard to see an end alright. As long as people (some of whom will be reading this) are willing to pay to snort a substance of dubious provenance to get thier kicks then there will be no end.

I never expected some grey haired fella from RTE to come up with such a anti prohibition doco, even the Guardi on the show where saying prohibition was crazy.

It clearly showed Prohibition is not only not working but making things en times worse.

Drugs where not that big a problem before prohibition,
    Drugs are cheaper since prohibition
    There more readily available
Everybody on the planet is aware of them, not so before prohibition
Drugs contribute billions to organised crime

It's so obvious that prohibition creates the drug problem you'd have to be inbred stupid not to see it.

I'm honestly beginning to believe governments have vested interests in seeing the illegal drugs trade continue.

    I found it relatively interesting.

I'd be in favour of legalisation of everything tbh. Natural selection will deal with the problems.

    No it didn't.

It was one the most balanced & unbiased documentaries RTE have ever put together.
Extremely well done i thought, and the reasoning put by both sides were argued superbly.
I couldn't pick a side at the end of it.

Those anti-prohibition 'Gardai' were retired by the way, as were the DEA guys.
I didn't think they where picking sides but clearly stating prohibition is causing the problem.

True, but how many of those deaths are related to quality or bad judgement on dosage? sometimes it's not the drug itself that causes the death but the way in which the criminals mix it down to increase profits. Then there's the people that don't know drinking over 5 litres of water will kill you. But these all get blamed on the drug.

It takes a hole lot of stupidity to kill yourself on any drug. The governments are not protecting the stupid by keeping drugs illegal.

    ...
Even if they become legalised & regulated, it's without doubt gonna increase consumption which in turn is gonna cause more deaths.

And how many deaths per year do we have at the moment due to the global enrichment of organised crime, the treating of a medical problem as a criminal issue, and the general fear and intimidation that comes from allowing armed gangs to have such power?

    I don't know the answer but I'll bet it's quite a few..

The only answer to deal with drug mis-use is to first recognise and accept that people will ingest substances for recreational purposes.

Allowing for this fact, you then have to make it socially unacceptable to be wasted, and regulate it as such (in a medical sense though, as opposed to criminal). This requires a bit more effort than a knee-jerk reaction to the problem so I wouldn't expect to see it happening any time soon.

What a completely fukking ridiculas thing to say. I hope I'm completely missing your point here and you aren't suggesting the only reason people die from the effects of illegal drugs is their own stupidity but if I'm not, just cop on to yourself there.
