Yep... it's an argument at a wedding I believe. Just shows you how important good boxing skills are, and just how hard it is to hit a moving target - when things go live. Not the greatest of opposition to be fair, but still....

Apparently Royce doesn't teach "sporting" BJJ when he does seminars, inasmuch as he'll never say "and you've got your sweep so that's 2 points", but I think the material is much the same. I'm just going on what others have told me, I've never been to one of his seminars and probably wouldn't go. Might try to get a photo with him though

I was at a Royce Gracie seminar a few years back. Very nice guy, very slow and smooth with the gi. The only thing I didnt like was the guard pass he taught, its the one they teach in the gracie academy in California, so everyone who has been taught it now calls it "the academy pass" it puts you in more trouble against a good guard guy than any other pass I have seen. But apart from that the seminar was good and I got to roll with him for about 15 mins, he is very technical (obviously!) and good to roll with. I have also rolled with Renzo and Royler both of whom went nogi and were far more dynamic and aggressive, which obviously meant I enjoyed it more. The photo with the guy that started the whole ball rolling was worth it too. :D

    Hi April Rain
Yes thats me. I have been working with Colm Whooley ,Declan Breen and many people at the National Spinal Injuries Hospital for a few years. We have developed a programme which incorporates some of the principles of JKD into a self protection programme. At the same time recognising that a spinal injury places a person in a challenging position vis a vis self defence. We have discarded 90% of the normal JKD curriculum but about 10% has been found useful.
    Awareness raising has been vital.
Contact Colm Whooley at the hospital for more information.

    Hi Martin,
Nice to hear from you. That sounds like a great and worthwhile programme. What books would you recommend to read up on JKD? Tao of JKD by Bruce Lee? Any others spring to mind? Best regards. April

You got it. Gets more beginners triangled than any other pass. Chris started his Jits career with Rorion and Royce and that was the only pass shown for the first 6 months at the academy. They then told everyone to forget it and showed them ones that actually kept you out of trouble. :D

Ah I believe you are referring to the gracie gift guard pass :D

LOL I was lucky enough to have done some jits before being shown that one by a mate. I remember saying eh, wouldn't that just get you triangled a lot? I also have a student who does it all the time cos he saw it in Gracie JJ or something. No matter how hard everyone says "stop doing that!" he still tries it when he gets frustrated!

One of the lads came back from a Royce seminarrecently and said that he thought the triangle straight on, as in hips in a line, no angle. I thought it was a bit strange since every other top coach I've ever seen teaches it the other way. I seem to remember he had his reasons but this is 2nd hand hand so I don't know what they were. Thought it was odd though but what does lowly blue belt me know?

roper someone questioned him on that at the last seminar i was at, he said that it can be either straight on, or at an angle. he said not to become too dependant on the angle.

I'm an even more lowly white belt, and I've got long legs, but I find that I can get the triangle on in the "straight on" position, then I can angle out if needs be, maybe this has something to do with it.

Just a side note, Fergal Quinlan, whom I trained with, always taught it at an angle, this is just a personal observation
