Hi i posted this yesterday but it got moved into the dentistry forum and i can't reply anonymously. I didn't get any recommendations for dentists there either, i just really really need to find out how to find a dentist that can do the work under iv sedation. I hesitated in posting because i don't want to get messages saying find a gentle dentist etc, i have tried loads of times, and met really brilliant dentists but couldn't do it. i don't expect people to imagine the fear. i know its odd. but i am desperate and need to get something done with my teeth as i am in awful pain every day. if i can't get a dentist that does sedation i will just put up with the pain, but surely theres some dentists that do it?

    original post below

i hope someone can help. i need to find a dentist in cork that can do dentistry under sedation, i think its called twilight sedation. i know they won't do general anesthetic but i need to find a dentist that does iv sedation in cork. i have a phobia of the dentist and have tried to go to see really good recommended gentle dentist but i just can't do it. its not a fear of drills or anything like that, i don't want to go into it too much but i was abused as a child and strangled during it, and the feeling of being kindof pinned down in the dentists gives me flashbacks, i know i am a looser but thats the truth of my phobia. i really need help at this stage, my teeth are in awful condition, cracked and rotting, i am so ashamed. i never had a toothbrush until i was old enough to get it myself, so my teeth were half destroyed by then anyway. i am in a panic over what will the dentist think of me? please can someone recommend a dentist that does iv sedation in cork as i am desperate now and in pain.

I'm not sure if this is a possible solution, but maybe a trip to your GP might help. The reason I say this, is that I was in hospital (for something completely unrelated) and had a toothache so the hospital dentist (dental surgeon?) was sent to see me and I had a wisdom taken out while I was an inpatient for the other problem. It was done under general anaesthetic.

I have gone under sedation with Donal O'Keefe, Dennehy's Cross, Cork -021 4345858. He can arrange to give you an injection into the arm which totally calms you and even though you're 'awake' it only feels like you are there for a couple mins, even though once he worked on me for an hour and a half! You have to sign a form of consent and promise not to drive, cook, use heavy machinery (!) etc and get someone to collect you and supervise you for the following 24 hours. It wears off fairly quickly afterwards though. Like you I have a chronic fear of the dentist. The only propblem I found with him was that it can be really hard to get an appointment. Once I was in severe pain and when he examined me he told me I had to wait a week to actually do the procedure, he gave me medication to take in the meantime but I couldn't stand the pain so he eventually saw me a couple of days earlier. So make sure you tell him it's an emergency. It's also a fairly expensive addition to your treatment, I think it was around 120 or 140 extra for sedation! I'm sure you'd pay anything though at this stage for some pain relief.

Hope it works out for you, let us know how you get on, there isn't much worse than dental pain.

I think Barry Clogher in Clonskeagh, Dublin does it. It might be worth ringing to find out.

    Hi

Don't want to be negative but be a little careful with IV sedation. If there are other issues apart from dental phobia IV *could* make things worse. You'd be best to discuss this with the dentist and/or anaesthetist before. IV can bring things up from the sub-conscious during a session. I had IV up in Northern Ireland and it worked for me but my dentist did mention there can be adverse reactions as it does bring you pretty deep.

Another route might be regular oral sedation - basically the dentist gives you a good dose of valium about 45 mins before the session. This might be enough to take the edge off the situation. Loads of dentists provide this service.

    Good luck with it.

PS the northern dentist was Hughes O'Boyle in Newry - they have a guy come from the local hospital once a month to do IV sedation, would highly recommend them. Great dentist in Dublin is Michelle Brady in Anne's Lane http://www.anneslanedentalcentre.com/ They do Oral Sedation and she is incredibly sound, very gentle and pretty much stress free (I don't think they do IV but you could ask).

I was like you. My teeth were in bits and I just couldn't go to the dentist because of traumatic experiences as a child. (Fillings without injections etc.) I've been attending a great dentist in Dublin for years and get IV sedation for everything from fillings to extractions. It's very safe, carried out by a fully qualified anaethatist and a nurse is present at every appointment. It's not cheap but I can't recommend this guy highly enough. You really don't have to suffer anymore !!

PM me if you want his details.

Hi I was in the same situation myself, I hadnt been to the dentist in years and was terrified of even the thought of the place. I had to get quite good bit of work done I wasn't knocked out for anything of it. The dentist I went to was Shane Curtin
Ardfallen Dental Practice Ardfallen Centre Douglas rd Co. Cork
    (021)4291616.

Hi highly recommend him as he is very very good when dealing with nervous patients and explains everything to you and does not rush you. All I was can was I had no bother going in for 2nd n 3rd appointment after putting the dentist off for years. PM if u want anymore details.

I'm afraid I can't help with the dentist recommendation but I think your real problem can't be fixed by twilight sedation.

What you need is counselling to get to the root of your problem. You were abused yes? It's not your fault but you call yourself a loser and you're ashamed of yourself. That's a very sad thing to read. You've have no reason to be ashamed, and you're not a loser. Were you neglected too? As you mention you never had a tooth brush.

My heart really goes out to you OP, I think you need help and if you talk to someone and can get over the fear of being pinned down etc it will be of huge benefit to you.

    Good luck.

Hey posted this in the phobia section - might be helpful to you

    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055364478

an amazing dentist in Cork, Tony Canty in Victoria Cross.

They called me before my consultation and brought me straight in. Talked to me the whole time - Dr Phil on a plasma screen on the ceiling. Quick check up then a date for a treatment plan under general anaesthetic.

I got a tooth removed, 2 filings and full gum treatment, scale, polish all done under anasthetic. Valium to take before the appointment so by the time I got there I was so chilled out and relaxed I didn't care where I was!!

Cried for about 2 days before but they called me every day and I have to say they were so good and understanding.

It cost €2500 but to be honest it was worth twice that as I was able to go back a month later to see the hygenist without the same stress as normal.

Teeth look amazing now and delighted with the results. Follow ups are included in the original costs too.
