Something that I have been wondering about today, I always write the number seven with the little line going through the middle so its a bit like a back to front F. Am I in the minority in so doing? I just can't help it though, 7 just looks incomplete without it.

So what should it be, 7 or 7 and the line?

How do you write the number seven? 142 votes

7 with the line, otherwise it might be mistaken for a 1.

As a general rule, the bar (cross) isn't being used in English speaking countries. Also, the Scandinavians don't use the upstroke on the number one.

I could never write my zeros with a line!
Well studying engineering it generally means diameter, that could get fierce confusing.

is that not a horizontal line?

Always have done a 7 also do my Z with a line through it but I think I only started doing that when I came to college and my Z variable would sometimes look like a two and I would get a bit lost.

7 + line through it. I started doing it in 1st year to copy a teacher.

No lines. It's pointless: I've never seen a line through a 7 EXCEPT in handwritten things.
Whenever I see the no. 7 in a newspaper, or on the internet etc. there's never a line.

I write 7. The other way is an abomination. Keep them out of our country.

7 with a line. I teach in Japan and my students think I'm a heretic when I write it like that though.

I deeply distrust people who put a line through their Z.

Have always put a line through 7.
Started with the line through 0 when someone in a place I worked in messed up big by mistaking a 0 for an O.

OK, we seem to have a majority in favour of the additional line through the 7.

The other number that I have an issue with is 4. When writing it I always leave the top open (I make sure the vertical line does not meet the 45 degree line). The closed top looks grand when typed but I feel just looks so, so wrong when handwritten.

So, opened top or closed top?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 16,396 ✭✭✭✭kaimera

ha, with a line for me.

I have a friend who writes a '7' from the bottom up. Thats just wrong.

I was thinking if there was one topic that "YORE MA" could not find its way into in AH it was a topic about mathematical digits. You have proven me wrong.

In fairness Xavi had to be patient this time and then just when you left, well an opening he was in there

With a line. Im scared in maths the examiner will read it as something else and that will somehow cause me to go from an A1 down to a fail :o

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,727 ✭✭✭✭Sherifu

    7 with the line.

As it stands we have the 66% majority. \o/

    Can't be confusing it with a 1!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,432 ✭✭✭Steve_o

7 with the - across it. In my handwriting, 7's look like 1's without the line.

Normally I'll write it without a line, but in work I put a line in because some of the people I work with are f*ckwits and I can't afford to have them mucking up.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,905 ✭✭✭Rob_l

I use the line through and usually with my zeros depending on the context of course, still I get foolish folk asking me whats this circle with a line through it?

    O0

but a 9 also looks like a g, do you do you're 9's with that little tail at the end or just a straight tail?:pac:

well of course you've only seen it in hand written things. in printed text it's easy to spot the difference between 7 and 1 or 0 and O. it's not as easy with hand writing so people put the line

for some reason i always thought that the 4 without the join was brought in with the advent of 7 segment LED displays (these things). they couldn't do a 4 so they made up a new one. i don't know where i got that idea though

Started writing it with a bar about 15 years ago and have never looked back. Silly French write their ones like 7s or even upside-down Vs so it's an absolute must here.

So who puts hats on their ones?
Who writes 5s as one continuous line?
Who uses a straight horizontal line at the top of their 3s?
The last bit of the 8, do you curl it to make it nicely symmetrical or bate a straight line up and not even close it off?

    - I rarely put the hats and the base on my ones, usually just a straight, vertical line.
    - 5 is always one continuous line (do people do it otherwise?)
    - I do put a straight horizontal line on top of 3.
    - I tend to draw 8 with the top loop bigger than the bottom loop.

I would put a line through a seven and zero... I mainly started doing it over the past few years in work as to distinguish between 1 & 7 and 0 & O.... I'd deal a lot with numbers, so for me it makes sense.

7 with a line, for that continental touch

I sign my name with a capital F that looks like the one in the attachment, so no line through my 7's.

I do my 5's in two strokes as shown also.

People who put a line through their zeroes are freaks.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,001 ✭✭✭✭Flukey

Definitely no line. If your 7 looks like a one, then you obviously have a problem mastering the unbelievably easy task of drawing a diagonal line.

Someones obviously never used theta before: θ

I do my sevens without the line, because I don't write my ones like sevens.

I do put a line through my z's, except only in mathematics, otherwise it easily gets confused with a 2.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 773 ✭✭✭echosound

Another vote for a line through the 7 here too - my handwriting is abysmal and for work I have to jot down a lot of stuff super-fast when talking to people - my 2s tend to look like 7s so the line is necessary so I don't end up ringing a wrong phone number etc.

I have odd lower case g's, they end up looking like skinny elongated 8s. and my lower case z's look like stretchy 3's. My capital Fs are like 7 with a line through it. I don't know why I bother writing at all, it's pretty much incomprehensible when I try to read it back, looks like a dying epileptic spider dipped in ink had staggered across a page wearing high heels that were hurting him.

Fountain pens are the way to go, they aren't great for taking notes in a hurry but for general handwriting they drastically improve the quality (or at least so I have found).

    No line.

The effort of putting in that line could prevent someone from curing cancer.

    Good idea! :)
but not for moi I'm afraid - used to use them a lot as I preferred writing with them, but being a leftie I tend to end up like a messy toddler with smears of ink all over the side of my hand (and from there, my face, clothes, and anything else I might touch) plus the writing was equally smudged. Oh and I had a tendency to drop spare refill cartridges into the bottom of my bag, which would naturally explode and destroy all possessions within a mile radius of the site, including money, which is not fun!
I am just a very messy and clumsy person it seems. I am the kind of person who will eventually work up the courage to wear a white item of clothing and immediately, less than a nanosecond later, spill coffee and beans and tomato ketchup and red wine (all at once preferably) all over it in an amusing primitive art pattern.

I never write 7 with a line through it. Im a bit confused though, how could a 7 look like a 1 .

Also if you but a line through a zero it would look too much like the diameter symbol ,Ø, and that could get confusing.
