just wanted to see if anyone had gone down the route of having a family member/friend living in the US purchase a mac and then post it back to Ireland...have a possibility of getting that done and just wondering if anyone had done this previously...cheers...

Had a search through both the laptops and mac forums but didn't see my question previously posted - apologies if it was...

There is a very high probability you will get caught for both Customs import duty and VAT, so I would question whether it was worth it.

If you're over there soon enough, just stick it in your backpack on the way back...like any other laptop. Either that, or if your friend is coming here, just have them bring it in their luggage.

They won't bother taxing PC's in luggage, because they might just be personal computers for business purposes, or whatever. I mean, they can't even prove you didn't leave the country with the thing in the first place, can they?

I suppose technically, it's fraud and illegal , but nobody really cares...

Technically, then can in fact ask you for Irish receipts to prove you purchased it in Ireland before you left.

However, they are not really after a person with one laptop, it is people coming in with more than 5 or 10. Wasn't there some guy caught at Dublin Airport last year with something like 50 iPhones?

That's the type of person they are after.
