New Irons which ones

I am thinking of changing my irons. I’m a high handicap of around 23. I have a starter set which is about 6 years old now and out dated. What should one buy, I have looked at the Callaway X20 and Mizuno MX19 MX25 etc. any suggestions on what clubs I should be looking at. I hit a long ball so distance is not a problem.

From what you have said your problems are with accuracy not distance.

Some decent lessons should see your handicap come down and then buy a set of fitted clubs afterwards. Improvements in your swing will drastically change the type of clubs suited to you.

Got the Mizuno Mx19s earlier this year and I find them great. Depends on what you are looking for but like you I just wanted to get off my starter irons and was recocmmended the Mizunos.

I got them extended by 1" (from the factory) and found the low irons long and straight from first few hits. The shorter irons in my view took a bit more getting used to but Im hitting them fine now.

    Hope this helps

I've just ordererd a new set of Talor Made Burner Tour irons. Look really nice. Google the callaways- I really like the X-20 Tours but a lot of negative reviews of them so I didn't go for them.

I'd disagree based on what the guy is changing from, ie: a starter set.

If it was a case of "I'm off 23 and my Callaway X-16s aren't quite giving me the trajectory I need..." I would totally agree given that the clubs are hittable but a starter set is most likely muck at this stage and probably worth getting rid of asap.

Lessons are definitely a good idea but you need a decent set of sticks too. Once you're not overly short or tall, go for a standard set. By the time you do get a bit lower it'll probably 2 or 3 years in which case it may be time to change irons again anyway and you can just trade in the set you bought.

Titleist AP2 irons would be great.

Adam Scott has been using them and they are selling really well I believe

AP2's are reccomended for Mid to Low handicappers. Maybe you are getting confused with the AP1's?

Why not pick up a decent set pf second hand irons. There's enough idiots out there who change clubs like the weather.

You'll save a few quid and will get something deent to work on your game with for the moment.

Forget the AP2 suggestion, they are for the lower side of single figures, even the AP1's are recommended towards mid to low handicaps.

The reason I asked the question was I wanted to see what people recommended. I have went to one of the local golf shops a taken away the demo clubs. I got the mx19 Standard and +1" +1/2 the same in the MX25 and the Taylor made FP. The club I was hitting the best was the MX19 Standard. I am 6' 2" and would have taught that the +1 clubs would have suited me more. Should a person like me playing off 23 get custom fitted clubs or wait until I developed my swing from lessons and just get standard (brand name) set of clubs for now.

got myself a set of taylormade RAC HT from nevadabobs online for 169GBP and free postage. Great set but only come with 5-PW.

As you can guess, the have a higher trajectory but not so much that you lose distance. would recommend them if you can get a good wedge and hybrid to make up for the lack of a 3/4 and SW.

I hade previously looked at the MX19's but found them a bit 'clumpy'. Nice improver set though and very forgiving. If you are not going for custom fit, get them up north in belfast/newry or online as it will save you a good few quid:

    e.g.
    MX19s in Mcguirks 400E = 320GBP
    MX19s in nevadabobs 316E = 249GBP

A little surprised you dont need that extra +1. If you have any clubs now, I'd recommend getting a lesson before buying. The pro may advise you to change our swing in which case you might find that the extra inch feels better. Some places (e.g. Green18 in sandyford) have swing analysers, which should be able to give you tips on club length and type, shaft type etc.

Main thing is dont rush into buying. Theres a lot of nice improver/forgiving sets out there:

    Cobra (fp)
    Callaway (big bertha/x20)
    Mizuno (mx19)
    Taylormade (R7)

There are also some good value sets being sold which are good enough for high handicappers:
    Colt (golfworks brand)
    RAM
    Wilson
    MD Golf (nevadabobs)
