A couple of shots from this weekends work, I was looking for something different in the first one and tried a big country look to them, used a 24-70 f2.8 with a polariser on a 1dmk3. Other shot is of a girls Horse who took off after dumping her on the deck. Feel free to comment.. :)

I really like the first one. Was the girl ok after the fall? A friend of mine fell off one of her dad's horses and had some of the worst bruises I've ever seen!

She got up and walked away from it.

Both very different style of shots - the 1st one is fantastic though, imo.

and the cheeky fecking horse in the second shot, looking for a high five after throwing her off! terrible.

could be just me but the focus looks off in the first one, it feels soft and the horse/rider are pretty dark. Compositionally, I think it could be tightened up as it is very centered with nothing of interest in the rest of the image and the half cut cloud in the upper left is mildly distracting. Not sure I understand what you mean by a big country look so maybe that was what you were trying to achieve

    Love the second one!

It was the look I wanted on one of the jumps at least. Below is a 100% crop of the centre and it looks sharp to me (there is some loss of sharpness resizing for web on photobucket). I just wanted the effect of a wide angle at close range and something that doesnt look like the shots that riders see everyday, I take the point that it could be tightened up compositionally but imo that would take away from the shot I wanted. Thanks for the comments though :)

no problem with sharpness alright, impossible to tell from the original image but the 100% crop is clear. I think it might be the impact of the front end of the fence with the half round wheel that seems to take focus away from the horse and the rider, I cant quite put my finger on it.

The high contrast between darkened face of the rider and the blown highlights on the pants do not make it an easy shooting condition but I definitely think a crop, even just below the cloud on the top will allow you to maintain the close wide angle without sacrificing any of the image. The image also feels ever so slightly off the horizon tilt but that only seems to be because of the space at the top.

Personally I would crop at the top (between the bottom of the top cloud and the start of the others) and possibly 2/3 of the way from the left to the start of the fence but thats just my two cents based on the image as I see it rather than on the shot you were trying to achieve - and I imagine trying to catch a show jumping horse up close with a wide angle is not the easiest :)

looking at the second one of the horse having just dumped the girl and thinking is there no respect anymore - i mean look at the animal waving to the camera like that. Its like he's saying " i'll see you later! " :)

    nice shooting - well done.

haha, I thought that too when I looked at it first!

I agree with FreeAnd... regarding the composition. It looks like it should be cropped closer to the horse and rider but the more I look at it, the more I kinda like the way you have a bit of context in the shot with the surroundings, however, that big white pole in the centre of takes so much away from the photograph in my opinion! Just thought I'd add my .02 cents

I had to look and look to find a big white pole. Then I realised you're probably talking about the jump itself.

Both brilliant photos. 1st giving full context to the event and surroundings, and the 2nd just so weird and well caught.

Great work, as always. Were these images used in any of the equestrian magazines?

Love the first one from an action point of view. Nice colours, but a tad bit blurry. Would have liked it blurrier or dead steady, personall.

Number 2 is very intresting. Nice and sharp too and god use of DOF. Could easily use that for some photoshop fun! Stick a football near his hands and a goalposts behind him for a start!

    Nice shots. Any more?

Good ones Keith. I didn't know that using filters for action-sport shots would work. Indeed, the sky in #1 is really nice.

I turn out the usual sport shots all weekend so just wanted to try something different even for one jump, thanks for all the comments and I will stick up some more from the weekend. Paul, I was working for somebody else so they own the copyright to the shots :(
