Employer drastically changing working hours - legal?

For the past year, since i started my current job, i've worked 4 days on, 3 days off from 8am-6pm.

The main reason I accepted the job (which pays quite a bit less than I earned in my previous role) was because I am doing a degree part-time and having 3 days off has been fantastic for studying and working on assignments.

Today, in an email announcement (!) we are told our work week will now be 5 days in a row, 2 days off, and we will work either 8-4 or 11-7.

Needless to say, no one is happy about this. Some people I work with won't get home til after 9 if they work the later shift.

    Can they legally do this?

    What says your contract?

All depends on the contract really.

That's where the train drivers fell down - they were contracted to be flexible but didn't like the idea when push came to shove.

Seeing as my previous comment was deleted, I'll say it again. Your contract more than likely has a clause about having to work hours as dictated by the company.

Your previous comment mentioned a company name. That was why it was deleted most likely.

And if the OP requests we delete such references, speculative or otherwise, to the company in question from the thread. If the person would prefer to discuss the matter without bringing in the company involved into the discussion we facilitate this.

Which I personally edited many months ago.

I would be surprised if your contract doesn't say they can adjust the working hours at their discretion. If your contract doesn't say such a thing, have a look at this: http://www.citizensinformation.ie/categories/employment/employment-rights-and-conditions/contracts-of-employment/change_job_contract
