On Friday evening I stood somewhere very special.

This is the island of Inishtrahull, Ireland's most northerly island.

Deserted and rarely visited, this is an amazing place.

We were allowed 40 minutes on the island. This is what I captured.

These were taken with my Pentax K10D and Pentax 16-45mm DA.

I was also using a Lee 2 stop ND grad to try and control the sky a bit.

Ideally, I would have loved to have been there an hour later as the light was warming up. But time and tide wait for no man and it was a mad rush around the island to get these two. I had to be very careful not to stand on any birds eggs as they nests all over the ground here.

I also photographed the 4 sika deer that live here. I also saw a bull seal seal, puffins and porpoises from the boat.

Post up some pictures of them as well. I would like to see the deer and puffins especially.
The island looks like a real nice place to be.

The pics are "nice" Andy but I'm not sure they would stand out particularly if the story didn't go with them. I think photos of our most northerly island would need to be a bit more dramatic.

I understand the circumstances you were in. Maybe you'll get a chance again?

    Thanks Valentia,

Yes, I would love to go back and stay overnight. I was very limited timewise.

I might have a go at some monochrome conversions of these as I agree the early evening light lacked a certain mood.

amcinroy : nice photos. If you're ever looking for somewhere similar, might I suggest Inishark off the coast of Galway? mots interesting because it was completely evacuated in the 60's which makes it quite eerie I find.

Right, I'm intrigued now. Why was it evacuated of it's final 25 inhabitants? I've googled it and can't find why. Only that 25 people were evacuated in 1960.

YeahOK - the island was generally completely unreachable during the winter months or under a lot of weather conditions due to the Atlantic completely closing it off. Here's a piece off a site thats reasonably accurate. My uncle's family are all Island folk from around there, and remember being there once or twice when I was a kid, its a wee bit eerie.

If you ever have an interest in heading out that way, there should be a few fishermen or boat owners on Bofin willing to take you out for a bit.

I really like the first picture - the light really picks out the terrain.
