WTF? Thats lunatic stuff. They are told to change work practices and keep their jobs - or dont and lose them. Unsupprisingly the vast majority accept but obviously a few loony SIPTU members have had their say. I would not like to be the select few who cost 1200 people their jobs:eek:

Thats just fuppin lunacy. Even on RTE news tonight they used the word 'loony'. If I was one of the 1180+ that voted yes id be looking for blood right now.

    I'm confused
Are they all in the same union, SIPTU?
If it's a ballot then majority rules, no?

Maybe the 13 are hoping for a mega redunacy package

Apparently the 13 are 'nessecary workers' or alternatively 'aircraft handlers'. This is bizarre - not to mention suicidal.

Well the company already lost 3 of the 4 contracts they held, I don't understand why they still have 1200 employees on their books, probably waiting for a handout from the IDA. Basically its a loss making company and will close down sooner than later.

That won't happen as the company is fukked and they already stated they have no funds to offer voluntary redundancies.

Maybe but - come on.....surely you see the issue with the 13 Union workers as against 1200 staff!

If those 13 are to jeopardise 1200 jobs, why dont they just leave and take redundancy if their so unhappy with the outcome?
EDIT : just read no redundancy, ffs!

No matter what company or industry, if they lost 3 out of 4 they are ****ed.

I have no idea what an aircraft handler does but I'd imagine it's a lessor role than most of the engineering roles in the company.

The company will be laying off hundreds at staturoy (sp?) minimum redunancy and these 13 may be to blame?
    Someone is gonna get lynched!

    Not no reduncancy, statutory minimum

Lets be honest about this - its like the train drivers in Cork - everyone knows (accept them) that that was an absolute fuppin disgrace. This is the same only it looks pretty damn costly. So the unions are trying to flex their muscles recently? Their just deserts will come on this one.

Just to back up my posts

"According to that document, management would be seeking annual cost cuts of €5m, partly by reducing staff numbers by natural attrition because there was no money for a redundancy package."
    http://www.rte.ie/news/2008/0527/srtechnics.html

"There are fears of significant cost cuts and possible job losses at aircraft maintenance company SR Technics after Aer Lingus announced that the company was only retaining one of its four maintenance contracts with the Irish airline."

And.........in an effort by the company to save them the workers were given a nessecary ultimatum which 13 wont sign up to which could and probrably will lead to everyone losing their jobs. Dont try and defend these workers actions. This is 100% union inspired guff and it will, hopefully, end in tears for these 13 workers. Unfortunatley thats not possible without EVERYONE losing their jobs.

I'm not defending anybody, I'm just saying even if all 1200 signed up, they'd still be fukked with forced layoffs over the coming months, the company is in serious debt and needs €20m over the next couple of years just to exist. The government already spent/wasted all our from the "celtic tiger" years and only recently told Waterford Crystal to fukk off when asked to secure a loan.

You know as well as I do the governmant cannot step in and aid individual companies with cash - If you want that sort of thing your talking a Socialist society - or worse communist.

The government should not subsidize any company in Ireland, I was glad to hear they refused to underwrite the huge Waterford crystal loan. I'm sure the 1200 jobs were already heavily subsidized by the IDA who will go to any lenghts to get companies to move to Ireland,

"The company was also seduced by IDA Ireland, which took Servier and Bazantay on a tour of 200 sites, including a salmon-stocked river near a ruined castle, so beautiful that Servier refused to build a plant there. The IDA arranged appointments with high-ranking officials and negotiated a grant agreement, which subsidised the creation of Irish jobs."

No, there is a difference between the IDA supporting companies to set up operations here and bailing them out. The latter does not come into it.

So poor management of the business has seen the company lose 3/4 of its work and it is now in serious jeopardy of losing the final 1/4 and its the Union to blame............wake up and smell the coffee

Unions should be working hand in hand with companies to look after the future of the companies. There is need for them to ensure fair working conditions to an extent, but what we're seeing more and more of recently is unions riding companies and organisations into the ground. On the plus side, this ultimately means no more unions. On the minus side, this means no more companies.

Maybe they can organise a strike on the dole queue?

Government subsidies and grants are the whole reason for the Celtic Tiger getting off the ground in the first place, attracting huge IT investment in Ireland. Takes money to make money, and better it goes there than throwing it in the bottomless pit of the public sector.

20 SIPTU members have rejected the package/their head-gaffer, jack o'connor, has said they are ready to discuss it further with SRT which seems like more SIPTU speak for more talk and no concessions.

I think they should walk away and close the facility

There's a lot to this story which has yet to unfold.

I find it odd that a company could be saved at all if it lost 3 out of 4 of its key contracts. I also find it very odd that 13 workers could or would jeopardise the entire company.

So much for social bloody partnership when the economy is weakening...

I worked there several times as a contractor and they couldnt agree with each other on the colour of snow.
Poor working practices, militancy and Parochialism. Staffed with a lot of ex air lingus guys who havent adjusted to life in a competitive industry but still have the state company mentality of a handy number for life.
Hope they sort it out as they do a lot of good quality work not to mention the effect it would have on the industry.

It will be sorted out... no longer a state bail out.

SR tech. will go to EI and sort this out.

This is total madness,so expect a good outcome.Guaranteed cast iron.

Watch this space..... reality will conquer.

 Really? I must let my Da know that that's how he's perceived.

Even when they were part of a state company they were never guaranteed a job for life, particularly during the mid 90s when they were on strike without pay. The fact is between Aer Lingus, Team, FLS and now SR Technics these guys haven't had job security for 15 years.
