WinRar Compression.

When I use the likes of Winrar to pack a group of files it does it very well but the overall size difference is minimal.

If the initial size of the group of files was 4.42GB it becomes 4.37GB after being archived using Winrar.

It doesn't seem to be much of a gain really other then the fact the the large group of files now become one.

    Size wise it's almost insignificant.

    Am I missing something here?

What types of files are they? If they're compressed video or pictures, you're not going to get much more compression. Also, what setting are you using to compress them?

    what type are the files?

jpeg's? mp3's? they are already compressed so you will only see minimal compression with already compressed formats.

Actually the files in my example were video files so as you say they are probably compressed already.

Outside of this though I notice little gain in the overall size even when the files are not video related.

As to the settings, I just installed Winrar & went with the defaults.

    Where do I change them?

Video codecs are some of the most frequently updated out there: its very hard to get much more compression out of an avi or wma file for instance. An MPEG on the other hand, is just a pain in the ass, and worth converting to avi or wma at your nearest convenience. mpegs are an inexplicably large format, probably because its used in cameras because it takes so much less processing power to encode: important for saving battery life in your digital camera.

When you choose to create a new rar file, there's a drop down box to change the compression level. But once the files are compressed before rarring, you're not going to get any significant compression from Rar.

Technically, avi/DivX are MPEG's too. MPEG is an encoding method - DivX uses MPEG4.
