Was just reading Phoenix magazine which had an article on these new weapons the US are transporting thru Shannon for Iraq. Known as a PASDEW (Precision Airborne Standoff Directed Energy Weapon) they can according to Marine commanders create an
"instantaneous burst combustion of insurgent clothing, a rapid death through violent trauma, and more probably a morbid combination of both"

The are placed is specially adapted gunships and are highly accurate at hitting targets from the air.
From the article I got the impression these are also psychological weapons in that the death from them is so gruesome witnesses to it will decide its no longer worth fighting an army with such clinical weapons. Apparently it shoots a laser which is invisible to the naked eye and the target will be burnt to a cinder on the spot.

Anyone know anything else about these weapons, they seem like pretty advanced stuff, like the legend of sci-fi movies.

Saw it on Future Weapons looks like a great weapon however if I remember correctly it uses up A LOT of energy they are also saying that it could possibly shoot down incoming missiles

Most people getting killed in Iraq don't know a thing about it until they get hit, so not much new there.

The US has been mucking around with lasers, microwaves and railguns for a while now, but I am unfamiliar with any which have achieved a level of 'practical for use'

    NTM

yeah but lets say they miss or whatever then the insurgent is alerted and can possibly suss out their position

with the laser it wont do anything unless it is locked on its target by the ground troops

The original story came from Wired.com , Phoenix were just putting it into the context of Shannon.

Trust the Americans to come out with something like this, looks like we'll have a new arms race on our hands and hey this'll be worse then Nuclear Weapons. I just hope that other countrie build this so that the American's won't use this as a means of bullying

How so? This appears to simply be another direct-fire weapon system.

This might help explain, just get past that crap at the beginning of it repeating itself. Found this video while looking up something other than energy weapons.

Exactly, direct fire as in it can hit any place in the world, imagine if it were put into the wrong hands

What, and a 105mm howitzer in an AC-130H can't hit anywhere in the world? A JDAM on a B-2 can't hit anywhere in the world? I'm not sure I see the distinction.

uuuh nope. doesnt work like that at all. its something like a high power 65nm laser. (if you have a spare CD burner you can make yourself a smaller one, burn your own eyes out and never see the beam) yeah it can fry you, but only if some fellah points it at you. kinda like any other gun

it can NOT just strike anyone anywhere in the world. thats silly. its line of sight only. sure its silent, invisible and not affected by wind. but its not magic.

Ok fair enough i just heard Death Ray an immediately thought Ion Cannon(Private joke) and thought if someone like Iran were to build one then that would increase the threat of weapons of mass destruction and given Iran stance towards Isreal i thought they might use it on them but that's just a theory
