    Hi,
I am currently unable to send e-mail via Outlook Express and wondered if someone could shed some light on the problem for me. I have googled the error number 0x800CCC79 but I haven't found anything to solve it.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Who is your ISP (Internet Service Provider)?
Your outgoing SMTP server must be your ISP's.

My ISP is Eircom and SMTP is the same.
There is a reference to Spamhaus in the error message and my IP address is on their files.

    From Spamhaus

"THE PBL IS NOT A BLACKLIST. You are not blacklisted for spamming or for anything you have done. The PBL is simply a list of ALL of the world's dynamic broadband IP space, i.e: IP space normally assigned to broadband/ADSL customers. It is perfectly normal for dynamic IP addresses (DSL, DHCP, cable, dialup) to be listed on the PBL. In fact all dynamic IP addresses in the world *should be* on the PBL.
The PBL does not prevent you sending email unless your email program is not authenticating properly when it connects to your ISP or company's mail server. This can happen if you have forgotten to turn on 'Authentication' in your 'outgoing mail' account settings, or if the username/password your email program is giving to your outgoing mail server is wrong.
If you are using a normal email program, such as Outlook, Entourage, Thunderbird, Apple Mail, and you are being blocked by a Spamhaus PBL listing when you try to send email, the reason is simply that YOU NEED TO TURN ON 'SMTP AUTHENTICATION' in your email program's account settings."

    SMTP Authentication is turned on.
Spamhaus will allow me to remove my IP address from their list but I don't fully understand the implications of this or indeed if it will solve my problem.

    Eircom doesn't support SMTP authentication.

    Thanks for the replies Kaizer.
I've turned off SMTP authentication and still the same.
    Any ideas what next?

    See http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055237369

Are you *ABSOLUTELY* sure you were connected to eircom.net when you tried to send that email? I know you say your ISP is Eircom but so did the last guy and it turned out the problem machine (belonging to a relative) was connected on Oceanfree dialup.

It would be helpful to know your IP address that's listed in the error message. If you don't want to post it here, drop me a PM and I'll take a look.

    Hi Snowbat,
I am certain I was connected to Eircom because it's my own PC and it's been set up that way from day one.
I'll PM you my IP address as you suggest.
    Thanks.

PM reply sent. Your IP address is from a block allocated to another well known provider (not eircom.net).

    Silly me:o
Every time I read ISP I thought only of my e-mail service provider and not my internet service provider. I am with Irish Broadband but previously had a dial-up connection with Eircom.
So I've changed the outgoing mail server to smtp.irishbroadband.ie and I'm back up and running.
Thanks Kaizer and Snowbat for your time.

No worries - glad you got the problem sorted :D

If you need to jump between ISPs regularly, you could use identies in Outlook Express to manage the settings - create one identity for each ISP with the right smtp server for that ISP, then switch OE identies as you switch ISPs.
