    Hi,

If I have a windows server, and I want to be able to connect to it from a windows PC, which port numbers do I have to open on the firewalls for this? I tried having a look on google, but I'm not sure what the protocol used for file transfers (eg accessing a share using windows explorer, not ftp).

    Thanks

    smb
    uses 137 , 138, 139 / 445

but better off using a vpn if going through a firewall - see the network forum
    see PPTP on 1723

Thanks, its on a company intranet and I'm just using it to host some software that I want the client machines to install so it's not a VPN scenario. I'll try those ports then thanks.

    Those ports are incorrect.
You only need port 445 udp/tcp
