I'm going to NYC for a family wedding and was looking to get a mobile phone over there as there will be many family members coming and going.

Does anyone know how easy it is to do the pre-pay sim thing over there?

Or is it easier to rent the whole lot off a rental company?

    Thanks in advance.

Bring your own phone and get a sim pack over there. Not expensive. You will need your phone unlocked and would have to be triband but most modern are so prob not a problem.

I have an N73 on Three. I de-threed the software on it and updated it to Music Edition. I presume that makes it unlocked?

I'll have to get an adaptor for the charger too I suppose.

To get this phone unlocked you will have to ring three and ask for the code.

The charger will work fine, just need a 3pin to 2 pin adapter, cheap as chips

They wanted over €100 for the code so I just left it. I will rent one out.

€100 is crazy. Are you half way thru a contract or haven't had the phone or that long of a time? They tried to charge people for the code before but around the €25

Why not use your own phone? It isn't really that expensive, as long as you are not chatting for 10-15 minutes at a time.

Being locked means you cannot insert another SIM. I am saying why not just use the current phone with the current SIM in the US?

ok its a point, but i wouldnt agree with you. I got a bill for €195 euro from three last year for 3 weeks in america and i wasnt using it much no long calls.

I would recommend the OP get his phone unlocked using a turbosim or something like http://www.bebo.com/Profile.jsp?MemberId=4803875088

I'm here at present. Am going to just rely on texts at 35c each.

Three wanted E35 to unlock as well as charging all my line rental for the rest of my contract up front.

Not worth it at that price.

Hey, I got my phone sim-free so I expect I'll have no problem using an american sim in it... do ye know which would be the best network over in the US to go with... I dont even know the names of any over there... I suppose T-Mobile... and Vodafone maybe?

you can get an i sim on deal extreme for under 10 us, i do not have the link, it slips under your own sim, any fone any network

You can pick up motorola phones over there (dont ask the model) for 20 bucks! With 10 bucks credit. This was with cingular (or whoever they are now) last year. $1 a day if you use the phone, but after that all calls to cingular network are free regardless of the length of the call.

Handy if everyone has a cingular phone. Their mostly Verision though, AFAIK.
